Right guys, I'm after some advice!

I'm coming up to being 17, and due to lack of funds, have decided against getting a car just yet. But I do need some transport and didn't have the money for a much wanted 50cc last year. So... 125cc it is! Ideally, I would have a motocross bike, something like a Honda CR125, Yamaha YZ125 or KTM SX125, and then MOT and Register it etc. with the help of the Qualified motorbike mechanic I work with. I know what I will need for either a daytime only MOT or a Full MOT. But I don't know what sort of cash I will need to part with, the ins and outs of having a 2-Stroke road legal motorcross bike etc. I am aware that there will not be an ignition key, fuelometer, speedometer etc. So thats ok, I'm talking reliability? Running costs? Insurance? I hope to spend no more than £2000 overall, i have allocated £1000 to the bike and £1000 to insurance, CBT, MOT, Registration and so on.

Any Thoughts?! Smile

Why would you want a bike with no lights, speedo or ignition lock and a daytime only MOT?

Get a road registered bike ffs!

Well I don't necessarily, this is why I asked the question.. I didn't know how much a full light kit would be. If it's too much then I can put up with a daytime MOT to begin with, as It will be in the summer.

You are far better of getting a 4 stroke 125 crosser all ready road ready as the 2 stroke ones will be well over the power limit, will cost silly amounts in servicing use loads of fuel and will be robbed espically if you have no ignition. If you are desperate check out a yamaha dt125.

Get a yamaha DT125 with all the lights & everything, derestricted they go well & are virtually bomb proof. MX bikes have to be rebuilt after a certain amount of hours so are not suitable for the road.

Hi

If it is pretty new then it will need to go through SVA I think, which will be a pain. You will need an electric horn, fairly quiet exhaust, etc. Think there are exclusions for some of the lights for off road vehicles (ie, those with a silly amount of ground clearance), which would make things marginally easier.

Fitting lights would be a pain, as it would be difficult to find a charging system that would bold on (and I doubt it would be cheap either).

Suspect it would not only be far easier but also cheaper to just buy a 2nd hand DT or the like.

All the best

Keith

Thanks for all the advice! I have had a look at the Yam DTs, and their not really within my price range. I have been offered a 2004 TM 125 by a mate at work and he is asking for less than £1000. I have ridden it before and it all seems good to me. I think that for an SVA they are happy with a kill switch? (Feel free to correct me on this) So a DT looks doubtful as for a good one it comes to alot more than it would to buy the TM and have it road legalised. I have found a quote for <£400 for a road legal TM 125 with a £150 excess which I think is reasonable as I am only 17!

Oh, and I have found some ni-cad rechargable battery lights, which may sound impractical, but they would only be used every other week or so for about half an hour (finish work in the dark, and thats only in winter!)

What's the advantage in taking a motocross bike and then making it road legal? Why not get the same bike that's already got all the road kit on it? Confused

Hi

DTs have been available in liquid cooled form for about 25 years. Should be easy to find one for less than the cost of the TM, let alone the cost of getting it road legal.

SVA is not that cheap, and the chances of getting through it first attempt are pretty close to zero (retests are at a reduced fee though).

Also there will be lots of other minor checks on the SVA for things that nobody would care about for an off road bike. For an example of how silly it gets, heard a story of someone bringing in a brand new GSXR1000 from the USA and putting an after market double bubble screen on prior to the SVA. The screen caused it to fail as they edge wasn't rounded enough.

All the best

Keith

Top one is a DT-R 125. £995.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/bikes/yamaha/dt-r/postcode/rm111lp/radius/1501/sort/priceasc/engine-size-bikes/70cc_to_225cc

I doubt insurance would be more than £400 at the maximum, and a CBT is £100. Even if it didn't have a tax and MOT they could both be done for less than £60.

Infact, if your overall budget is £2000 then you probably have closer to £1400 for a bike assuming you dont need to buy a helmet etc...

@Kickstart - I didnt realise that it was so fussy? Read somewhere that all they measure is seat height and ground clearance and comes with the cost of registration? This is just an early idea to overcome the costs of a car, I may decide to get a car or to go for a road ready 125, just exploring the options at the moment! Smile So I am open to any other suggestions. I like the idea of having an off road bike as then I can use it for its primary purpose too occasionally, i've always wanted to get into MX but never had the funds or means of travel, so would be good to hit two birds with one stone.
