Forget the sports styling and get a honda cg125/yamaha ybr125.
Same speed, less money and less to damage when you drop it. ____________________ Suzuki GT250 x7------- Fazer 600------CB250RS------Aprilia Rally 70----- Bandit 600

Hello Libby! i thought i was the only biker in/around Ipswich
Get a four-stroke single to start with : not the greatest bikes but reliable, economical and reasonably cheap to repair if or when you drop it
living in Ipswich means that Great Bently is not that far away.
it`s a good place to go on a Wednesday evening in the summer.
there is a pub, burger van, and the best part of a thousand bikers up there on a good night
the Copdock Bike Show is another event (suffolk showground) that is worth a visit. you might even find a cheap second hand bike there? ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |

Are you on crack?
an rs125 is not the same speed as a cg125, unless you drive it off a cliff. |
CBR125?.....
NSR125 would be 'more reliable' equivalent to the RS125. |
True, but i agree with the majority here. A 2 stroke (and worse, a sports 2 stroke! - covering both NSR and RS) just isn't newbie-friendly. I have heard of people who have started on something like an RS125 and done fine, had good mates who told/helped them with exactly what to do, never dropped the bike, yada yada, but personally i would think these are a minority. Hell, i even expect some people will buy one, not know/realise the need to keep the oil topped up at all times, soon run it with no oil, and break it - then start slating the manufacturer . Not all biking newbies are aware of the need to renew the piston rings and rebuild the top-end periodically etc (i don't know precisely what as i've never owned a 2-stroke, and am thinking i may finally be ready for one, as my 3rd ever motorbike).
Regarding sports - i would suggest that any newbie thinking of getting a "sports style" bike (i say style because road-legal 125s are not really sporty no matter how they look), get a full set of replacement fairings priced up before you buy the bike (that's the fancy plastics that you don't get on the cheaper naked bikes). The figure may well be shockingly high. If you can't afford to pay out this amount at least once when you drop the bike and break said fancy plastics, then don't get a sports-style bike. Naked commuter style bikes don't have these fairings, and so you can't break them - hence are more newbie friendly.
Regarding 2 or 4-stroke, just to reiterate - if you don't know exactly what you're doing, how it works and how to look after it, then don't get a 2-stroke! (as it's far easier for it to all go to pot and leave you in a financial hole) If you do know all about it, then great - but i suspect people wouldn't need to ask on the forums if they knew this stuff already.
4-stroke sports: CBR125 i'd like to second. It won't be fast, but it will work despite the newbie abuse you'll give it. Note: Has fairings...
4-stroke commuter: CG125 / YBR125 (etc, etc, etc). As above, won't be fast, but is as cheap as cheap motoring can be, even when dropped.
2-stroke bikes: I'd be surprised if you need any suggestions if you know all about these already.
It's my 2 pence, and i understand others may disagree - but there are a multitude of advantages to the above approach vs going straight out and buying with the heart (more than mentioned). ____________________ -- Ingah |

As it's safe to say i was definite newbie when buying my first two bikes, for good reason imo. I maintain the view that the 2-stroke 125 is not newbie friendly compared to the 4-stroke 125.

So essentially you can leave it go a little longer (as with many maintainence jobs then). Doesn't negate the issue, it still needs doing periodically and is expensive to have a garage do - as is the most likely place it will be done by the average newbie (labour costs being the bulk of the expense as usual). So great if you can DIY.

Having run 2T's in the past from Ap50's through to X7's and Lc 350. Doing at least 20K miles a year on every bike. And on one of the X7 and the LC doing run what you brung drag racing several times....
I can say hand on heart that I have never had to rebuild any of them at all.
All you need to do is keep all fluids topped up and look after them, whith exactly the same care as you would any other bike. |
OK, so you've gone through a large number of bikes - indicating to me that perhaps you haven't had long-term ownership of any single bike or are alternatively very aware of what needs and doing and what you can get away with (i suspect the latter), hence have managed to evade following the standard maintainance procedure of a rebuild every X miles without issue. You said yourself, the RS125 is supposed to be rebuilt every 10K miles - you can "get away" with less.
And are you going to explain about the greater/more likely possibility of a 2T (rather dangerously) hot-seizing, and cold-seizing (in newbie hands that is), or should i?
What about the distinct power band kicking in at an unexpected moment (like mid-tight-corner?).
This is a newbie asking for advice, so therefore i've aimed my advice (which of course is free to be disagreed with) at a newbie. And as it wasn't too long ago that i myself was asking these types of questions i'm still quite aware of the sheer levels of ignorance about how to look after bikes and other important knowledge that a newbie can be lacking, and so i'm giving out "safe" advice that is less likely to end up with new riders landing themselves in a mess.
I don't think implying that running a 2T simply by topping the fluids up and essentially ignoring things like a rebuild hoping to get away with it is is a clever way for a newbie to go about things (in the same way, i recommend all the gear all the time - and anyone is free to go out in just a helmet and take their chances). I think some people (especially so with those that aren't aware of the ins and outs) will get caught out and their bikes will need very expensive repairs as a result (potentially completely taking them off the road), so i see the 4-stroke as a "safer" option and this was the message i was originally trying to get across. ____________________ -- Ingah |

As I say to most people, look around this forum, there are tonnes of 'what bike threads', write down the list of bikes you have seen listed, go onto google images, look at all the bikes. Cross off your list the ones you don't like.
Then go out to a few bike shops and look at the ones you do like, and if possible go for a test ride, (if able) if not, at least sit on the bike and get a feel for it - distance from seat to footpeg, how long the reach to handle bar is, that sort of thing...
Then make an informed decision based on what suits YOU. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |
