I'm going to back college next September at age 19 and apparently I'm entitled to an adult education grant. I wasn't entitled to an EMA before because my parents earn just above the inclusion zone.

But... Apparently, now I'm 19 I can get £30 a week for studying. It isn't based on what your parents earn even if you live with them. It's you or your partners income.

"Payments are assessed by the learner's household income (not the parents, even if you still live at home) or joint income if you live with a partner who's in paid employment."

I had no idea I'd get this, and as I'd be at college 5 days a week the urge to get a job will be no more.

This sounds a bit too good to be true, has anyone ever had an ALG here? Is there some sort of catch? It sounds fair enough if you rely on your own income but if your still live with your parents sounds bloody awesome tbh...

Sounds legit to me. There are sometimes other grants and bursarys you can apply for provided your in full time education. Continue on to uni and you'll get even more money

Several times through uni I got random letters saying 'hi, you're at uni, we'd like to give you £1000/500/200".

£200 for turning upto college? I thought that's what the EMA was for.

They pay you £10, £20, £30 (depending on the circumstances) a week provided that you turn up every day to every lesson, aren't late and don't have any absences (are authorised absences allowed?)

I wasn't aware they paid you £200 just for turning up, is that a month, half term, full term?

It's part of the EMA scheme, you get paid your £30 a week, and every half term or whatever you would get a bonus for 98% attendance, which meant you could miss 1 day or
something, but since I never took a day off I always got paid.

I remember when I thought £30 was a fair bit of cash. As I recall when I was at college, I didn't get any grants (and that was when they did free grants or bursaries) I worked a sunday in Asda pushing trolleys (£45) and a half day saturday morning in a service station (£15, heh, £3 per hour!!) Often I'd nod off and find someone had been and gone leaving the money for their fuel on the counter. I also used to eat lots of Salt & Vinegar Sky Divers.

Anyway, We were told we could apply for travelling expense, we all did and lied enthusiastically. People in my class were walking away with over a thousand quid!

These days you can spend £30 in a heart beat without even seeing the money leave your account.

Of course, that was back in the day when I used to sleep in a crisp packet and have to get up for work down't pit before I went to bed the night before etc etc etc...

I Didnt agree witht EMA rubbish when i went to college.

How the hell can you decide that people arn't allowed this £30 a week, because their parents earn too much?

What happens if like me, the student didn't get a penny of the parents money, so had to really struggle by and have a job for after full time college, when other people got this extra cash for just going

Isn't the cutoff about £30k anyway? So even if your parents have 2 cruddy jobs earning £15k each you won't earn a penny. Yet your parents may be struggling to get by on a joint income of £30k (mortgage, bills, food etc you know)

It always left me slightly incredulous.

If you didn't qualify for any grants or bursaries, the advice the SAAS gave to students was to sue your parents. I didn't qualify for anything, they told me how much my parents should give me, I said they won't/aren't able to part with that kind of money every week; they said take them to court.

There was such a story in the press not so long ago. Not sure what happened though.
