Buying road tax online you can ride right away right?

Yay or Nay? , in that I know the disc takes 5 days to arrive or there abouts but you can ride immediately right?

Depends on the period you've bought it for. If you've bought it to start from the 1st April, then no, if you've paid for it to start at the beginning of March then yes.

Well, you CAN, but you could still be done for not displaying a current tax disc.

If your bike has come off sorn, the ANPR database probably take two weeks to undate anyway, so you're bike might still be flagged, if its just renewing, i wouldnt worry about being stopped for no tax... but obviously you still dont have the disc.

You've got 5 days grace for not displaying it, as long as it's continuously taxed, i.e. it was taxed the previous month.

So if you purchase it in the middle of the month, you get no grace period? That seems a little unfair! Surely they supply you with something to print off to show you've done it on-line and you're waiting for it to arrive...

If you buy it in the middle of the month, then your existing tax disc is still valid for another couple of weeks, so you don't need the grace period (even though you get it anyway).

If you tax disk ran out at the end of Feb and you renewed now then you do not get the 5 days grace for failure to display.

Then the 5 days grace doesn't officially exist. That said if it was me I would just apply for it online and then use the bike. Sure you might get the idiot jobsworth copper, but then with a disk on display they would probably just look for some other excuse.

I assume so. I purchased new road tax last year to start on the 1st of january. I got my tax disk on time but didnt get round to fitting it to my bike until about the 20th of january. Altho I was technicaly legal (taxed, insured etc), its a good job speed cameras can only detect speed eh?

I haven't had my tax disc on the bike since June. Keep it in my pocket but I did get stopped by the boys in blue once, they asked and I had left it at home that day (washed my jacket) but sent me on my way, never even said I was to get it on the bike or whatever.

Personally I would ride it but I'm no sayin' you should.

It's incredibly rare for them to bother with 'failure to display' these days - I wouldn't worry myself.

I've been "reported" to the DVLA for failure to display three times now. Once by a copper who'd stopped me for speeding and twice by PCSOs who stuck notices on my car.

Nothing has ever come of it.

I now display a note in my car windscreen above my four years out of date tax disc explaining that if my vehicle were untaxed, I'd have been had up by ANPR by now and telling whoever is reading it to go and find something better to do than stick notes on my windscreen.

They must have read it because I KNOW they were going about the town last week and they haven't stuck anything on my car but have on others in the street.

I used the online service last year, I checked about 3 weeks before it was due and they let me buy it, it arrived in plenty of time, I'll definately do it again.

From what I've seen the only 'effective' ANPR that they have around here really is the DVLA vans with cameras that drive around.
