Anyone done this?

My mate and I want to travel Europe for 3 months or so next year, I'm wondering if anyone has some good advice? Thinking of hiring a camper van or buying a transit type van, getting some tents and just fuckin off wherever we may roam, I wanna spend at least a month in Germania but the other two months just seeing some sights and getting abit of foreign culture in! Where are the best places to see, and bikes aside, what would be the best form of transport? How much would we be looking to save for 3 months worth (we aren't afraid of slumming it), I was thinking 5k and two credit cards each would cover it. Also which way round would be best, start in Amsterdam and work round to France or vice versa? I also would love to visit Russia, are there any special restrictions on entry of that country? Or indeed the Eastern Bloc in general? This is basically the trip of a lifetime with my best mate so dont give a shit about costs, will save up as much as needed to make it the best trip I can!

Any experiences / advice is greatly appreciated!

Don't start from Amsterdam.

I can only begin to imagine the debauchery that would ensue if i found myself there with £5K in my pocket and no particular place to go. I think even by the standards of the liberal and forward-thinking Dutchies it would still be frankly shocking. And most likely illegal.

Cool

europe is expensive

if you have 5k, and 3 months, consider somewhere like thailand

having said that, i've not toured europe or thailand, but the principle still applies

Boat it to bilbao, head down to algarve and work your way back east along the coast, spain, gibraltar, andora, france, italy, switzerland, austria, germany and czech republic then back into germany, nederlands and amsterdam, belgium back into france and a limp back via dunkirk-dover into reality of how poo the UK is.

Not so much of a massive jaunt as it may look, you'll have a hard time taking 3 months to do it.
Could probably do it in a week if you had to.

My advice was 'just don't plan it, don't tell anyone...just go' throw your survival kit into your van and go, make it a real adventure. Oh too late, you're doing the exact opposite... Laughing

Take your time, mooch about, meet some people, go to some parties (there should be a good few hippie parties out there through spring in Andalucia)...go at a steady pace...and enjoy your time away from 'normal life'.

Europe is incredibly expensive £5K for 3 months won't get you far.

Feg it with 3 months why don't you just follow one of those trans Russia mongolia routes? , Russian petrol is what 20p a litre (you need a visa though £30 LoI + £50 for the visa + Insurance).

As said, fuck Europe well off.

Euro is par to the pound now, you won't get very far with 5k.

My 5 months in Africa (with 3 months costs £1200 each -£3600 Neutral- not including spends) including flights, transfers and a lot of drinking and diving came to about 6k.

At the moment, Africa or Asia is where it's at.

Yeah I was in south africa for a month, and I'd recommend it.

Its warm when UK is cold, you can do western world stuff like surfing, bars shops etc, but food and accomodation is cheap, and the landscape is pretty impressive

I spent £500 on flights, and about another £800 on everything else.

Loads of things for adventure tourists like shark cages, paragliding, kite surfing, motorbike hire etc.

See my thread in touring and exploration, for some nice pics.

Why don't you try one of these intrepid driving "contests".

I'm contemplating offering myself as a co-driver (cos I am crap at fixing my own car) in something like the Caucasian Challenge

I'd really like to do the Budapest to Chernobyl Run but if my car broke down, I'd just sit there and cry till someone came and fixed it for me. So I would be better off being a co-driver.

Some mates-of mates-of-mine just took off on the one across the Sahara this weekend. I was dead jealous. And I have some other mates who ended up in somewhere like Mongolia last year before the sump was ripped out of their little banger and they couldn't go on.

BTW it is 5k each, so total trip for budget is £10k and as many credit cards as we can get with big limits. We found this site which looks decent for transport - https://www.wickedcampers.co.uk/van-tour.html would cost us £3k for the camper with insurance - at 21/22 with 0 no claims that is a bargain really.....plus the car itself is everything we need.

Germany is our main point of interest, would like to stay there for at least 3 weeks to a month of the trip. I'm liking bramble's way round most atm, don't fancy Thailand or Africa tbh, they would be more 'week long holiday' kind of destinations for me. Good points made by all, taken all your advice onboard though. Probably right about starting in the 'dam first, but we have both done enough drugs to not really be *that* arsed about going mental, its gonna be a proper grownup holiday really, as Clanger said.......but ok maybe a few narcotics Shifty

I would like to visit Russia but again I'm thinking it would be more suited to a week long specific trip, would love to see Moscow in winter.

I am not looking to be settling in one place (bar Germany) for very long, hence the camper so flights and accomodation don't really factor, I don't wanna do the whole planes thing, this holiday is about one last gasp of freedom before properly settling into the grind, finishing it up crossing back onto native land with loads of pictures, a massive grin and maybe a few duty free items Thumbs Up Very Happy

Oh and of course....travelling back to Leeds for my first night in my own bed for three months.

And a Russian bride.

Or two.

You forgot South America. Land of good music, good birds and good chilling! Not to mention the adventure aspect!

P.S. I don't know how much a camper costs to buy, but consider buying one and then selling it at the end.

Me and my mates bought a Land Rover in South Africa, drove thousands of miles around Southern Africa then sold it for more than we bought it for.
Rental returns you nothing after the trip (although is more hassle free and more comprehensively insured etc I would guess).

Just bear the buying -> driving -> selling idea in mind.

We did, with a Transit or similar, but at 22 with licence less than 1 yr and 0 NCB we would probably get humped on insurance for more than £3k Sad

3 Grand to rent one of these??? Pretty sure you could buy one, insure it and get breakdown cover for less than that - and be able to flog it at the end.

Make sure you take everything of value out of the van whenever you leave it, thieves would look for campers to steal from as they are easy to break into and loaded with goodies.
I used a saloon car and tent, locked everything in the boot when leaving the car and never had any problems, but met people who'd had campers broken into 3 times in 6 month!
This was in Oz but It would probably be just as bad in Europe with more people and more dodgy areas.

I'd agree that Europe would probably be a better destination to travel then Thailand (but a lot more expensive) I spent 2 months traveling Thailand and most places look the same after a while. Locals are overly friendly, but you know its only because of the £££. It's also over run with backpackers and sex tourists.
Europe has a lot more variety with so many different counties and cultures. You're more likely to see what the locals are really like as they won't care about your weak ass £.

I remember a good TV program that was on a sky channel about 3 ozzy backpackers traveling around Europe in a van, it was a good watch and they went to some really cool places, not sure if you could get a DVD from somewhere- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVZHMdxkyI4

I wouldn't go Europe, but if I was and had that budget I'd mostly go for eastern Europe. I was just off in Bulgaria skiing, and rather liked it - went down to the local village for a meal on the last night, very cheap and very good.

Eastern Europe in general is a good place to vist at the moment. A lot of it is now in the EU, which means you don't need to worry about paperwork. People are friendly and all want to know about the UK, a lot of them want to come here and work. Cheap fags (around £1.50 for brand name ones), cheap food, cheap accommodation.

Plenty of soviet relics kicking around. The people are not big fans of communism, so if you want to buy old soviet stuff its cheap. I got some decent old commie gloves for £25 quid, and could have got him down a fair bit.

Of course, with a few months and a few grand I'd be spending it shagging my way around the southern states of the USA. Fly out, buy a truck, explore. No point camping when motels are that cheap, and you'll be able to find a bed to sleep in with a girl in every club in every town, trust me on this. See New Orleans (lock the doors and don't stop), see cowboys riding a mechanical bull in a club, shoot a large array of guns in a pawn shop, gamble, experience southern girls, relax on the gulf coast, drive a long straight road across the desert and go skiing in the same (long) day, ride a boat full of drunk girls around a swamp, fly a plane, jump out of a plane, get in a fight with rednecks, drive into the ghetto and see how accurate Hollywood can be, make friends with rednecks and go truck jumping and mud sliding, take your pickup offroad in the forests, get a speeding ticket you'll never pay, buy cowboy boots, sit on a girl's porch swing drining bourbon while she kneels before you on a hot day, rent a harley and see what it's all about, run away from a snake, watch a NASCAR race, laugh at Americans complaining about the price of gas, eat crawfish, go to Vegas, get out of Dodge, see Elvis' house, see inbreeding in Arkansas.
Then feel totally confused when you end up in LA, having not seen anything we would consider a city for 3 months.

You may be able to tell that I'm a fan of the south.

I did a mini road trip of some of the Southern states(well mid west) in 2005 Smile
california>arizona>new mexico>texas>oklahoma>colorado>utah>nevarda>and back to cali
I can totally confirm all that Robby says is true.
In the more inbred places people were even paying for our food and drink at times and asking us to pose for photo's with there family. Crazy people.

Uncle Robby, that sounds amazing to the point that you have now made our trip of a lifetime into the first part of a trip of a lifetime!

Focussing on Europe this time, would love to have a motorhome sorta thing, cheers for the link to the Toyota Emina, was wondering what car it was lol.

Any more stories/suggestions?

Muchos gracias! Mr. Green

The thing with Thailand is it totally depends where you go...and who you are travelling with. If you are in a group of blokes, hang out at the usual beach haunts, then yeah you'll get targetted...

But there if you go off the beaten track, travel solo (male/female), this stuff is not overly obvious...and people seem more genuine and life is a lot more chilled...staying put in an area for more than a week, and you get treated like a human than as a walking wallet.

i did europe and basically it was 3000quid a month for 4 months,
where aisa was 1000 quid a month,
you can do europe cheaper, if you basically live in your van,
which if i didnt have a girlfriend then thats what i would have done...
damn women make you spend stupid money, for places to sleep,
under a tree is where its at Very Happy or a nice secluded bush
