As below

https://www.craigvetter.com/pages/Motorcycle_Designs/Streamliner.html

What are the considerations for say MOT etc for that sort of thing, in that the biggest expense that keeps coming up for a biggie tour I'm planning for 2013 is still fuel, if I can get into the 100mpg + region then costs fall dematically if I can get into the 200mpg region even better! I reckon with some foam and fibreglass maybe thin alloy sheets I can make something similar and get uber MPG.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi

Not sure there are any major MOT issues, as long as there are no sharp edges, etc.

Biggest issue is the effects of the aerodynamics. Biggest effect of air on a bike is drag which acts on the back (an exagerated sharp front isn't really important, the way air is affected at the back is VERY important). Trouble is that this drag which screwing up performance, etc, also makes the bike more stable (ie, centre of pressure is a long way back). Smooth it off and you bring the centre of pressure forwards and possibly in front of the centre of gravity / where thrust is applied making it unstable (like throwing a dart backwards).

Other issue I can see is engine cooling, but that should be fairly easy to solve as long as you keep it in mind.

Also worth mentioning that aerodynamics play a roll as speeds increase. At low speeds they are next to irrelevant. In stop / start use the extra weight would probably more than counteract the fuel savings at lowish speeds.

All th best

Keith

Where did you learn that from? A book of some kind as I might be interested, the bike that I am considering is either a CG or a Honda Cub. I'm curious to see just how far I can get.

In that as said it will be restricted to CG125 speeds, and I'm considering making the prototype out of card board and maybe then using it as a template for mould out of fibre glass. Add in some uber high gearing and 70mph would be attainable,

I wonder what a super aero-dynamic 'busa could do top speed wise with no extra tuning just better gearing?

Anyway back on topic, if you go ahead with this please do a thread in the projects bit, would love to see how it turns out.

Hi

Afraid not seen a book on it. Way too much reading of things over the years with a basic understanding.

11hp would be enough for 75mph even with OKish aerodynamics (ie, Hayabusa, which while good for a bike is still pretty poor). If you could improve that to the level of a 125 GP bike (still not good, but better than a 'busa) 11hp would get you to about 86mph. With a guess as the cda of a Bonneville streamliner (cd is about 1/5 of that of a 'busa, so just assuming a cda of about 1/5, although likely to be smaller so an even lower cda) then 11hp would get you to about 125mph, but not really practical for the road.

But either way it won't take a massive amount to increase top speed.

Think if you have the time then it might be easier to prototype it with some think sheet ally.

All the best

Keith

Keith it's not the speed issue that I am concerned about it is uber fuel economy, i.e. those 470mpg bikes on 2 gallons (US ones to boot) I could get to the South of France. I am currently rather time rich but money poor hence I think it might be interesting to do this project not for day to day riding as that would annoy me too much.

Highest I saw on my CG speedo was 75mph - this was down hill, wind behind etc - however possible you'd get a chunk more speed with better aerodynamics.

Side winds are obviously going to be of concern too.

What happens when you stop at traffic lights? Surely you would fall over, or you would need to include a set of legs like the paralysed guy had on the gixxer/R1(?).

Sorry, more using the speeds to show the effects of aerodynamics and how it can make a massive difference. Fuel consumption should be similarly affected.

To get really impressive figures though you would need to be at a fairly constant speed. Acceleration would eat the fuel, and the extra wieght of the bodywork would make that even worse.

All the best

Laughing Simple Thumbs Up

Figured you would seal the bottom completly for minimum drag but I guess it's not like you're going for maximum possible speed or anything.

It's not going to be fun to ride on the road - low power, extra weight will see to that.

You're only going to get the economy benefits when on good quality tarmac, with light traffic so you can keep your speed constant, avoiding wasting energy by speeding up and slowing down.

I doubt your massive tour is going to be on such roads. As soon as you chuck in corners, junctions, traffic, unpaved roads and hills the potential economy gains are going straight out the window.

Plus, when you fall off, it's more to fix.

We have had this discussion, and that streamliner web page on here before.

I think a maxi scooter such as a Tmax, uses a similar seating position.

Something like a yp250 is gonna give 80mpg, which isnt far off that specially made thing.

Nothing wrong with the aerodynamics though, there have been 200kph runs from modified versions, modded but still powered by electric motors.
