why does my bike fall over whilst riding in the wind?

hi my 125 seems to want to fall over when it's windy even when there's just a little bit of wind, anybody know how to stop it happening?

You'll notice it with all small bikes. Try countersteering into the wind.

Unless of course your bike wants to fall over in normal conditions. Then it could be a number of things.

Grip tank with knees.
Normal grip on bars i.e not hard not too loose.

Stay aware of crosswinds and alter your grip and position to suit.

Now bugger off.

If you are relaxed it's intuitive and not scary to steer against the wind. Never found it a problem

This is an interesting one actually and i found myself on my 125nsr in the same situation just the other day.

Cruising at 65 on a duel carriage way and an intermittent hedge ment the wind came and went, very much underlined the effect of the wind on the bike!

Strong blasts of wind seemed to almost push the bike across the lane whilst it was still facing dead straight!

Other effects are the bike leaning and such.


I was taught by my instructor that this is because i was to tense whilst riding acting like a large sail (at first it was my CBT and the other way was my first real run on the NSR so pretty tense on both occasions...

To counter this you have to grip the bike (as mentioned above) with your knees and relax your upper body, let the wind push your body slightly in the direction it wants to and this seems to dramatically reduce the effect it has on the bike itself!

This does take quiet a bit of getting used to and on my old bike i didnt have many problems with cross winds (was far more relaxed riding it), so i jst have to get used to riding the nsr (although with all the fairing i wouldnt be supprised if it was still effected more than my previous bike).


So yeah, grip the bike with your knees, relax your upper body and let the wind nudge you a little. Resisting it forcefully will only transmit more of the fore to the bike.

It can feel a lot worse than it actualy is and can be a bit disconcerting getting blown about. And yes, it happens on all bikes but in 30 years, I, personaly have never been blown over while moving. Just stay in the centre of the lane and, as said, lean onto the stronger gusts. Keep your speed up too, the faster you are going, the less you'll get blown about.

Ha, the worst I've ever had to deal with was on my 125 on the way to college.


Wet, greasy and slightly Icy. Get to a 60mph road. Full throttle.

Big open space and the wind hits me.


With the road being so greasy/icy/wet I literally get thrown onto oncoming traffic.

The way i found to combat it was to duck down making myself catch less of the wind, lean into the wind pushing the handlebar forwards on the side your leaning to. As others have said this makes the bike lean over into the wind. It's called counter steering as your actually turning the bars right, making the bike lean left into the wind removing it's effect.

This is one of the main skills to learn on a little bike and will stop you wrecking something bigger and better when the time comes.
