Tow bar mounted bike carriers?

Anyone got one? Very tempted with one for my motocross bike.
Price is very reasonable. A lot less than a trailer, and I can just chuck it in the boot or in the garage when not in use.

I think even my 125cc MX bike would be on the limits of the weight I'd want to put on it though.

I asked a similar thing a while back, I seem to recall it all coming down to the 'Nose Weight' that the carrying vehicle is rated for. Most cars are very low. Whilst a lot of people have carried similar bikes with no problems, insurance might be an issue should you have an accident.

I've seen a 600 KTM on one, though it may have been a more heavy duty one. looked ideal to be honest.

My Leon had a 50KG weight limit on the tow bar (the amount of weight it could take pushing down). That would include the bike and the carrier.

I think 2 mountain bikes + my bike rack got close to the limit.

If it was me, I would just get a trailer that packed up.

A very cursory search on google seems to suggest the suggested max nose weight is 50kg.

The bike and rack would probably be closer to 90kg.

I'll have to do some research to see if it's a legal thing, or merely a suggestion.

I do agree, a folding trailer is the best of both worlds. Especially since I'll be taking road bikes to trackdays.

But then again a folding trailer is probably 5/6 times the price of a rack. And I can always ride a road bike to a trackday (with enough spares to fix it enough to ride home again Wink

)

It is a legal thing as far as I know, I'm afraid.
Seen plenty of heavier bikes on them on larger hatchbacks, but obviously there could be some issues if you were in an accident and it was suggested this caused problems - doubly so with your profession, of course (presuming you can't do the nudge-nudge wink-wink thing Smile

).

One of the few reasons I could be tempted by a Land/Rangerover is they have very good nose weights.
