i think that quote lacks relativity, yes we are a minority road user, but if you had the same crash in a car as on a bike it wouldn't likely result in death, i dont know why though..... maybe something to do with the large steel body cage protecting you? he death rate is higher due to the circumstance


i read some where that the most common motorcycle accidents occur with

.middle age men who have been absent from riding for some time and then return to biking,
.on high powered sports bikes (not sure what cc they mean)
.on countries roads

type of accident.

.collision with on coming cars when over taking,
.and approaching corners to hot and resulting in a spill

Don't think it means that we kill a lot of other roads users, rather it means there are a lot of fatalities for us relative to the number of us on the road ... hardly surprising when blind cagers drive into us!!

I would guess pedestrians make up a even larger proportion of road deaths......
And they are NOT even road users....

Have you ever seen what happeneds to a car when it hits a tree? Pretty much identicle to that of a biker hitting one.

This quote is ridiculous. Surely its up to me if i want to endanger my own life. So long as nobody else gets injured i should be able kill myself if i like.

Its the reason work have banned motorcycles being ridden on work time (business use). Which also means to them that i cant commute to college on my bike either!

i believe in this also, which is why i never wear a seatbelt in the front of cars, if im in the back and someone is infront of me then yeah, ok, i see the point. but if im in the front surely thats my decision.......but noooooooo, i would be breakin the law....wtf.

Thing is though, they may argue that your decision making process is flawed by your belief that it won't actually happen to you. What I mean is that I very much doubt you genuinely like riding bikes so much that you would be perfectly happy to die in the next couple of years to continue to do so.

(I'm not saying that you WILL die in the next couple of years by continuing riding by the way Laughing )

Nothing, but their objection is that every biker who wipes themselves out costs the local authority (police, ambulance, nhs, council etc...) around £50,000 to clear up, we're not good value for money.

Personally, I'd like them to come down hard of those lads in tarted pugs and citroens who wipe themselves and their passengers out.

And while we're on the subject I'd like there to be a 2 year licence restriction on new drivers only being allowed to drive cars < 1000cc, not driving at night, and not carrying passengers, I reckon that'd drop the death rate of impressionable 15 year old girls overnight.

in the same manor that large family car will?

because given the option i think id sit in the car over the bike for that crash test dummy experiment

A tree will go through a car like butter, pushing and crusing everything in the car onto the driver/passengers, i saw alot of cars that had hit trees when i was a car breaker, and i honestly dont know how i survived my impact on my gsxr.
Cars front bumpers touching the rear bumpers etc.. passanger doors crushed onto the drivers door, certainly both dead etc.

is that including the vast variety of angles you could hit a tree at, which would not impact on the drivers side or the vehicle? or velocity of the crash in comparison, seat belts, air bags etc etc?

i find it hard to believe that in general context that a car offers the same amount of protection to the occupant as a motorcycle?

We've had this before...

There are as many people on bike forums that honestly believe it's as dangerous to crash in a car as on a bike as there are people on car forums who believe wearing seatbelts won't help you in a crash. You can't argue with them but in the long term I guess natural selection may gradually reduce their numbers Laughing

It depends on the details of a crash, but it goes without saying that a car offers far more protection to the occupants than a bike offers to the rider. Cars have crumple zones, air bags, and other stuff like that... bikes don't have anything. Laughing

In general terms, it's much safer to crash a car than it is to crash a bike. Obviously there are crash scenarios where a motorcyclist would walk away uninjured and a car driver in the same scenario would be carried away in a body bag, but there isn't really any question about the fact that overall, bikes are more dangerous than cars.
