I've always changed a filter with every oil change, for no other reason than i just always have done. Yet Suzuki recommend changing the filter only every third service/oil change.
I know the cost of a filter is only a few quid but i'm interested in the fact that everyone i know changes the filter with every oil change......can the small amount of old oil in a filter really contaminate new oil ?

A filter for my bike costs about £3, oil about £10 so £13 it costs me to service my bike.

No point not changing the filter.

Hi

Filter is there to catch the rubbish, and as it gets blocked more and more of the oil will bypass the oil filter. Filter is a pretty nominal extra cost when doing an oil change so I would change them every time.

But I do have sympathy with those who have to remove the exhausts to get at the oil filter.

All the best

Keith

Um well..... there is a point if you change something that doesn't need to be changed.

Yes but like Keith says, the cost is negligible against an oil change anyway. It is like changing 3 spark plugs on an IL4 or washing half a car.

Its nothing to do with the cost, i want to know if its detrimental to the engine or the oil not to change the filter every oil change.... because Suzuki obviously doesn't think it is.

If I'm doing the oil change at the proper service interval(s) I'll normally alternate changing the filter...
but if the oil change is overdue, I'll change it every time.

I've done it with cars and bikes over the years - (following my uncle who was a keen amateur mechanic, as well as doing itprofessionally for a number of years).

The way i see it is, an oil filter is there to stop shit getting into all the oil gallerys on your bikes engine. I change them everytime i service a bike unless told not to in this case i talk to the customer recomending a new one and why, 9/10 times they needed it doing... 4000miles ago aswell as the god dam oil. Black piss is not oil.

I doubt you would notice a difference. There is a possibility that by not changing the filter, it gets clogged up and stops filtering effectively and more and more oil bypasses the filter meaning particles of metal and dirt get around your engine blocking up oil galleries and potentially damaging your engine internals which is why it is better to change the oil filter than not.

If Suzuki don't think it is necessary then don't change it if you don't want to and I doubt anything bad will come from not changing the filter.

Wow... can you not accept that people are helping you.

Change the filter if you want every turn.

My manual for my car says change oil every 3000 miles, replace filter after 6,000... so thats an oil filter every 2nd oil change.

Its worth it, the price is tiny... the most important part of your bike is the oil in my opinion... as long as its getting oil its good, when it stops getting it because your filter is not doing its job.. then you will kick yourself for not doing it..

I change filter every time, always have done, bike, car, van.
It isn't worth risking it, even thought the risk may be very small indeed.
I always use genuine filters too, after twice having problems with pattern parts.

Usually change filter too but do occasionally go every other oil change. For example this weekend i gave my shed a small spring cleaning and discovered i had enough oil left in one container to do a change. Didn't have a filter to hand so just changed the oil and am not in the slightest bit worried- will do it next time.

I'd s most enthusiasts who look after their own cars or bikes will probably end up changing oil/filters more often than specified in the handbook any way so chances of a filter becoming ever getting clogged are slim.

I do a new filter each time - kickstart says to Laughing

In all seriousness though seeing as it is a few quid I just change it each oil change on the "while I'm there basis". I also try to do 1000 or 1500 mile oil changes, totally uneeded but it makes me feel better Laughing .

Also, if you don't drop the filter, then you aren't changing ALL the oil, are you?

Canister types anyway.

I say that the manufactures are not working from assumptions, but from hard fact's and from taking oil out of engines run over a long period of time and measuring the particle's in it.
Hence why they have come up with the service intervals for the parts.

So I can never understand people that are now putting in Synthetic oil in yet changing at the same intervals as mineral oil. Its designed to last longer...... Upto 10X the manufactures claim....
Or even changing it sooner than the manufacture recommends....

I'm not on here asking for help. I've been changing the filter with every oil change for 34 years. But i may have been doing this needlessly according to Suzuki, at least on my later bikes anyway. No one on here has any hard facts that a filter needs changing with every oil change, yet they still do it anyway.

Hi

I am afraid I would be more inclined to see service requirements as being the result of the engineers recommendations being hammered down by the marketting departments want of a cheaper service schedule to make the bike appear cheaper to run.

Just checked a couple of workshop manuals here for the 1200 Bandit and the GSXR1100K. Both basically the same engine. The GSXR lists the oil and filter to be changed with every 3500 miles. The Bandit list the oil to be changed every 3500 miles, but the filter only every 3rd oil change.

Oil has improved a bit in how long it lasts, but no change in how long they recommend keeping it in (although that could be due to contamination, and a built up of acids in the oil). But not sure that the filter system has changed at all, nor the generation of debris that sits in the oil and gets caught by the filter, yet that is now far less frequent.

Although the cynic might say that an early GSF1200K probably had the oil holes in the pistons drilled in the wrong place so most of the oil and debris would have been burnt off long before it had a chance to affect the filter Wink .

All the best

Keith

There could be an element of truth in that Keith, although i find it hard to be so cynical to believe that a major motorcycle manufacturer would recommend anything that could be harmful to one of their engines, just so the customer could save a couple of quid every service.

i did find it odd that my gsxr only requires a filter change every 3rd oil change, fook that for the sake of £5 i'll just change it, only 1 fairing to remove

Anything is bad for their engines (eg, look at old F1 engines that have the engine warmed up by pumping round hot water for an hour or so before they even start the engine). It is a balance between cost and doing the abolute max to prevent damage. If the difference is (say) between the engine lasting 50k and 60k, then I doubt they are bothered as by that age it is probably a decade out of warrenty and 95% of the bikes will have been crashed or scrapped.

The oil itself shouldn't really wear out (although the additives do, and it is the less additives required in fully synthetic oils that mean they last londer), but part of its job is to take the rubbish from around the engine and hold it in suspension until disposed of /caught by the filter. In theory an exceptionally good filter changed regularly would remove the need for oil changes entirely.

All the ebst

Keith

Well riddle me this, EVERY oil change I've ever done on any 4t thats done even 200 miles on it's oil is black. I fairly assumed it was part of the reaction with petrol and combustions.

Are you trying to tell me there are some bikes out there that still have honey coloured oil after a couple of k, or are do you just own shares in magnatec?
