It sounds like you'e got some spyware.

Simple, just go to www.lavasoft.com (or type "adaware" in google). You can download a free copy of Adaware onto your PC. Once you run it, it's quite good at removing most of the common spyware programs you've probably got running on your PC.

Also, get yourself a firewall too (Zone Alarm is free but very basic).

Hope this helps.

Once you've got rid of the problem, have a poke around AOL cos they might offer a free firewall, pop up killer, all that kinda stuff - they market themselves as the safe way to surf so I'd be surprised if they don't offer some kit to stop shit getting onto your machine.

Oh, and stay off the dodgy porn sites. Wink

If your running XP, you probably have the messenger service running. To disable it, go to control panel->administrative tools->services.
Look for the service called messenger and double-click. Click Stop and change the startup property to disabled. It won't cause any ill effects and it should stop many annoying popups.

Yes, agree with other posts. Spybot Search and Destroy (although I don't think its being updated recently) together with Lavasoft Ad-Aware should sort out the spyware. Both free (free Ad-Aware is the basic version, shouldn't need much else, remember to update it).

If you haven't a firewall suggest ZoneAlarm (the basic version is free and very good).

To stop popups suggest downloading FilterGate (mine was from a cover disk - think its free, please check). This works with IE.
Alternative is to download the Opera browser which has a popup blocker built in.

I too use the google tool bar and I have Norton 2004 which also has a spyware filter.

Never had any probs with the google tool bar and so easy to put on your pc.

Regards

Andy
