Bit of a bugger here, My brake light, tail light and sidelight all blew in one day, but my headlight works fine, Dipped or not.
Any idea what could cause this?
This is on my RXS by the way.

I've heard your reg/rec can do it if it's overcharging the battery. Check your battery with a multimeter with the bike running. It should be no higher than about 14.5v. Test it at a few different revs (higher ones really) to make sure it never goes above that.

No higher than 14.5v? WOW! I think THAT would cause my overcharging... my bike is 6v XD

What am I looking for voltage wise?
Or is there something else I should be looking for?

Hi

An OK battery tends to allow smooth out any voltage spikes which would otherwise pop bulbs. Check the level of acid in the battery is OK.

All the best

I imagine, at a guess you wouldn't want more than 7.5v across the battery when it is on. Silly question, are you sure it is not a fuse that has gone? But RXS was terrible for bulbs, I've done some 50k miles on bikes and I blew more bulbs on the RXS in 8k miles than all the other bikes to together. I'm pretty sure I have only had 1 bulb blow of 'natural causes' and one when I crashed on the other bikes. I had 3/4 headlight bulbs and at least 1 indicator bulb.

If they are all on the same circuit then try and check the wires for wear too. I had an arc occuring on a worn wire that kept blowing the headlight fuse on my bike.

I'll replace the bulbs first, and then give the battery a check...
Hopefully it's something simple...

Isn't an RXS100 on dirct lighting? In which case the sidelight and tail light are on one circuit which is neither regulated or rectified and has nothing to do with the battery. The brake light is usually on a totally seperate circuit run off the battery.

I've never quite got my head round exactly how it works but with a direct lighting system, the total wattage of all the bulbs should always be the same. If you have a lower wattage, bulbs pop. Higher wattage and they are dull.

As such. When one bulb pops, the others tend to follow.

Another thing to consider is they are usually fitted with a ballast resistor. This adds load to the circuit when using the sidelights to bring the current draw up to the same level as it would be with the headlight on.

If the ballast resistor has become detached from either its wire or the frame earth, bulbs would pop when running on sidelights.

In all reality, there is no point running sidelights on a bike with direct lighting. The amount of current drawn is exactly the same as if you had the full headlight on.

So. My number one guess is a simple cascade bulb failure, replacing the bulbs should fix it. Check your instrument panel backlight bulbs too.

Number two guess is a faulty ballast resistor which would probably just need reconnecting or the earth point cleaning up.

I suspect the brake light is a red herring and was just taken out when the tail light filament popped.

I could of course be very wrong.

I once had four rear light bulbs blow in a week. No apparent reason for it happening. I've found RXS bulbs last well normally, particularly the headlight. I've never had a sidelight, indicator and console bulb go. The most likely cause of blowing bulbs is vibration as a result hoodlums caning the motor well into the red Laughing
