Sister's MOT

Sister just took her bike to MOT, which I passed without any problems last year when it was mine.

Failed on:

Missing front brakelight switch - fair enough

Loose headstock bearings - fair enough

Worn chain/Oval sprockets - I put a new c+s on when I sold it to her and I would be very suprised if she has put on 4k since getting it. Apparently the chain goes loose/tight as it turn so it is knackered... Don't all chains do this to some extent?? A bit of working the chain with oil should remove any tight links and even still the chains damn near new!

She took it to some "MOT's R US" chain store (I didn't even know such a thing existed) so it wouldn't suprise me the people there arent to hot on bike stuff.

Seeing as she is 300 mile away makes it somewhat difficult to sort out, especially as all the issues are simple DIY ones.

They want 150 quid to pass it!!

I would take it to a proper bike shop. Sounds to me that you only really need to get a new switch and tighten the headstock if at all.

Well worth the price of a MOT elsewhere.

£150 is very cheap for a new chain and sprocket new head stock bearings and a new front brake swich, + fitting there is at least 2 hours work there more like 3-4.

Not sure you can clean the contacts on a missing light switch? But then saying that, I am quite sure I would notice if my light switch had gone awol so maybe you are right.

Anyway, sounds like an excuse to get over and visit your sister and start apologising for the shoddy bike you sold her! Bring some spanners, WD40 and small sturdy brush.

Aye. i can't see how the front brakelight switch could be missing altogether.

I also can't see how a 125 would have irrevocably wrecked a chain in that short a distance (well, I can but it would take more than the usual level of neglect).

In my experience, 125s don't usually suffer much from sprocket wear. i usually count on 2 chains at least to a set of sprockets.

Sprockets don't go oval, this is bullshit. Chains do however develop tightspots, this is perfectly normal providing it isn't tight at one point and dangerously loose at another.

Anyway. £40 for a C+S kit. or £25 for a chain by itself. £5 for a brake switch. Tighten the headstock bearings. I'd allow roughly half an hour for a vaguely competant fitter to do the work.

Where is she? Maybe someone off here could take a look at it for her.

I would just clean the chain in parafin Then lube well, I wouldn't have thought it could be knackered after 4k miles.

Get her to take it to another MOT place.

If you can be bothered, report them to trading standards. Wont do anything though.

Yeah it's annoying as all the things are just little issues..... It would take me a lazy afternoon (if that even) to sort out what are really only little things.

Tis a bugger when they are so far away, it frustrates me knowing that good money will be exchanged for minor works.

I think my dad is persuading her to go to a bike shop, which can only be better.
