So, what pressures should you *really* run on a trackday?

There has just been this almighty argument on Pistonheads in the bike section about this. I suggested that track day organisers tell riders to drop tyre pressures by 2-4 psi and I got lambasted for posting 'crap'.

Please if possible explain your reasoning behind what you run because that certainly wasn't the case on Pistonheads...

In my R6 I ran 30 hot in both in Racetecs. I found they worked best for me. In my hornet I ran 30 cold in both on BT-002 Pros.

I ran 22 hot in the rear and 28 hot in the front of Power Ones (again on the R6) because of the stiff carcass that's what you're meant to run them at.

Personally I think unless you're hugely quick(which I am not) then 30 cold in both is decent enough. On my very first trackday I dropped my pressure on my Hornet down to 30 front 35 rear from 36/42.

There is no definitive answer to my mind. It depends so much on your tyres and your ability. I think organises mainly aim that comment at novices/first timers as most of the more experienced guys know what works for them. For people in the novice group then a 4-5 psi drop is fine (to be fair some I've seen could leave their pressures along and not get any issues).

The last thing they want to do is drop their pressures loads and then find they can't get enough heat into the tyre to get the hot pressure where it needs to be.

For supercorsas I go for 35/35 hot, which tends to mean 31F/29R or so cold. For the Pilot race, it was recommended to run them a lot lower, as they had stiffer sidewalls.

As I've said before, the first 4th place I got at club racing was with tyres over 50psi, so until you're faster than a 4th place in clubmans minitwins, it's probably not worth worrying TOO much about Smile.

Oh and serves you right for posting on Pistonheads Wink.

30 front and rear cold for me. I've been round on standard road pressures before (36/42) and had no problems. Like G says, it's nothing to worry too much about

You were right to mention about lowering the pressures if you are a fast rider the tyre temperature will increase greatly as I have seen several track dayers with bulges manly in the rears, the answer is fill them with Nitrogen.

I used Nitrogen when racing a RS125 & RS250 Honda as it make the whole suspension setup thing a lot easier and finer as well.

Last week at Cadwell we were told to drop our tyre pressures a bit from road pressures otherwise we would be riding on balloons.

This advice was given at morning briefing - to all riders - and was given by the tyre guy who was saying a few words after the Hottrax guy had finished.

I can see it being necessary for the F-off fast boys but me on a Bandit? Laughing I left mine as they were and had no issues all day.

Thumbs Up

Anyway, I usually go 31psi front and 30 in the rear, so that's quite a drop from the road tyre pressure.

That definitely wasn't a tyre pressure issue... Wink
