hi there...having a real hard time starting my h100SD at the moment. what should i be looking at? my first guess was checking the points....is there anything else? ive just replaced the ignition coil

also she doesnt really have any topend speed....could this be because of a weak spark?

she'll do around 50-55mph without killing her. really is pushing it. when i first had her (6months ago) i used to be able to get her to do 60ish

i have a k&n style airfilter on the bike....which the garage says is making the bike run a little too lean. would this cause a loss of topend speed

thanks for any advice

H100 SD hmmm mine is H100S2 so CDI instead. Don't know why they kept changing the ignition system, anyway..

If the points are correct, then is the condenser ok? How is the spark? Have you checked to see if its a strong spark? When was the plug last change? I have 3 different H100s and the spark plug can just become naff even when there is no sign of wear. I get about 5-6k miles before changing

Is your ignition key barrel ok? A known problem is the ignition barrel makes poor contact resulting in the bike electrics playing up esp the indicators and brake light but not the headlight or rear light. (headlight and rear light are direct powered from the generator)

To summarize:

First thing is to check the plug, renew anyway and see if any change

Second, check the ignition barrel with key and turn on off and ensure that the indicators still work and/or brake light works. This has happen to me, you turn on and no power to indicators etc.

Third, Check timing a little more complex but i'll get back to that later

Goodluck

al the electrics seem decent enough...indicators & brake light all work fine....very strong light.

ive replaced the plug a few times in the last month or two...it gets to a point where the plug gets real dirty and its really hard to start. i will try and get a picture of the plug tomorrow as it is. ive just changed from using sh*tey oil to using branded oil and it seems to make a difference. she was alot better today.

theres two things that come to mind. first is the ignition barrel...i had a wire come loose and i soldered it back on. im not the best solderer but it seems in good contact. good enough to run the bike anyway...and it hasnt come loose again since

second thing is the neutral indicator wire...down next to the flywheel. it makes a good connection but the wire is loose (but still in contact). you can pull it out, theres nothing securing it there. hasnt stopped the bike from starting up

i havent got the tools to remove the flywheel and check the points gap. in honesty i dont want the hassle of removing the cylinder head again etc. i'd probably be looking at about 25-30 quid in parts to do this myself ie flywheel puller....feeler gauges....engine gaskets....im tempted to take it to the garage and have the points professionally set up and the timing checked properly. how much do you think i'd be looking at to get a honda garage to do this?

Honda would charge about a minimum 120 quid for that job!

Independent would be about half that.

You don't need to pull off the flywheel for adjustment.

Use a screwdriver through the gap in the flywheel to adjust the points. Turn by hand if need to align the hole for adjustment, easier if the spark plug is taken out and turn over using kickstarter gently.

Neutral light had no effect on starting the bike, this bike is not modern and is very basic! A black cover should be there for the wire connection, this usually falls off and gets lost when the sprocket/flywheel cover is removed. Not needed but if it missing then lots of grease over it works well.

Ignition barrel, right depends what wire you have resoldered, if its the black/white stripe get a new barrel (in my opinion) but if runs and stays running for your trip then disregard.

Another is the oil pump setting, have you adjusted and check the notch on the pump arm aligns with that on the pump body at full throttle?

Right timing can be out, a basic check is to use a strobe timing light and check. Not expensive and easy to use. You can make your own using the bike headlight instead! But awkward to check the timing but its doable. I'll run it through if you like?

I assume you have the Haynes Manual? The genuine Honda is a little better but more technical

ive rounded the head on the screw that attaches the points, so im unable to unscrew it to adjust points. there isnt enough room to lock a set of pliers on it without removing the flywheel...maybe if i spent an hour on it i could figure something out to remove the screw...but its pretty tight

will check oil pump notch
black cap has long gone on the neutral indicator wire...might see if i can buy a spare from scrappy

i have the haynes manual

could you run through the timing? how would you do it using the headlight

thanks

Always try a new plug, even if you have a spark. Sometimes a plug will spark out of the bike but not under compression.

SJ is CDI, so not an issue with points in this instance.

Probably needing a new ignition barrel. Also have you got compression?

if your very clever you could replace the points screw without takin the flywheel off but its fraight with danger, slacken screw and use magnetic probe to gwet screw and washer out from flywheel, but do not loose any of the samll parts inside the flywheel, they may stick to the f/wheel magnets.........get a flywheel puller ( a proper one ) which will comer in handy on all sorts of bike flywheels........
