I had my ear syringed last year, cos I couldn't hear much out of it (much yuckiness involved) didn't hurt though, just had to put olive oil in tiwice a day for a week before they syringed it

had a major pain my ear, went back to docs, got told I had a yeast infection, got some drops - got told to go back in a week if it still hurts.

It fluctuated between annoying and very painful all week I went back and doc said the infection had cleared up and it was just earwax, and to put olive oil in again. It hurts so bad last night I could scream, I can't close my mouth to chew, putting a crash helmet on and off is exquisite agony, lying down hurts, if i do anything physical my ear hurts in time to my pulse. Strangely heavy metal doesn't seem to affect it.

Is it normal for ear wax to cause this much discomfort?

I've no idea whether it's normal or not, but this has happened to me last year. The pain was almost unbearable for a couple of days, (couldn't sleep at night, I felt ill, had major pain in my ear) but as it started to clear up (using the olive oil) it started getting better.

After a week passed by, I went to see the docs, got it syringed and that was the end of it.

Go to boots and get some earwax remover drops - they're fucking brilliant - and the more wax you have, the more it fizzes when you put the drops in. A few days of that and the wax will literally fall out of your ear, onto your desk and you can sit and make tiny sculptures with it.

Yeah, it can cause a lot of pain, especially if the wax has been there a long time, its compacted and you've used cotton buds or have very bendy ear canals.

You could always go back to the GP and tell them what pain your having, they may be prepared to syringe without the drops. Failing that, you could ask for an open referral to the Oral Toilet Clinic at the Hospital (if yours has one, most do).

You can then ring and arrange an appointment with them, rather than using syringing, they use air suction, basically a tiny vacuum cleaner to clear the wax. You can then book an appointment every so often to stop it building up.

Hope you get it sorted

The fizzy stuff from Boots sounds good. Most nights I go to sleep my left ear feels like it's got an insect wriggling around in it. I presume it's excess wax shifting.

Or theres an insect wriggling around in it.

After reading this I'm wondering what humans do about earwax buildup "in the wild".

There must have been an ancient way to deal with it, given the huge amount of pain it seems to cause.

Sympathies - hope you're better soon!! I think ear ache is one of the most horrid pains ever (along with tooth ache) - just can't get away from it and it really gets you down!

I like the sound of the fizzy things from Boots, as I'm super cautious about ear stuff - worried about doing damage with cotton buds etc. Thumbs Up

I had similar symptoms except I felt like I kept getting ear infections that doctors would look at and say the ears weren't infected. Turns out I had glue ear and needed grommets.

2 years after grommets and I am still symptom free.

Take drops with caution. Any infection in there and it could feel like you have just dropped red hot lava in there with no means of removing it in a hurry. I know this first hand.

If you get repeated infections then make sure your doctor takes it seriously, the missus had loads of infections from an early age and docs did bugger all about them apart from handing out the useless drops.

She has recently had to have an op to fix it properly, which the surgeon said that it should have been done years ago. The infections have dissolved some of the tiny parts of the ear (I'm no ear specialist, can you tell? Mr. Green ) and her hearing is way worse than it used to be in that ear.

Cheers

Grim
