Yes. You need a V62 form and it will cost you £25 to get a logbook.

You can get the form from a DVLA office or online as a PDF.

Yes if it has been taxed after 1976 you can just apply to the DVLA if it hasn't then it won't be on their system and you'll have to have some proof of age.

Ok thanks. What happens about the owner of the bike though? The bike has been abandoned in a garage for about 5 years id guess, i have no idea who the owner is. Is there anyway that he could claim the bike back? Or that i could be done for theft?

The current registered keeper will be sent a letter by the DVLA. If they don't reply then the V5 is transferred to you as far as I know.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Tell me too Very Happy

In all seriousness, I'd report it to the police, and offer to recover it to your home and begin the process of applying for a new logbook.

Nothing to lose!

Its an old Honda XL 250. It was left in the shed of a house my friend rented out, the occupants did a runner and left most of there stuff, mainly due to not paying there rent and running up some serious debt. Hes been living in the house for the past 5 years or so and hes just had it lying around in the shed. Now hes decided to rent the house out while he goes travelling again and want rid. I only really want it if it can be put back on the road though as its not worth my hassle breaking it!

A month or so ago I was interested in getting hold of an old Land Rover that has stood on a garage forecourt for 10 years. The garage owner said he can't sell as he doesn't own it.

I wrote to the DVLA asking for the previous owners address (costs £2.50), but they returned the cheque and said if I have made every possible effort to locate the owner (told a white lie and said it was in a field), and cannot trace them, then I should contact the loacl police station, and if it is fine with them I can apply for a new v5 in my name.

That would be how to do it the legal way... aka ask the cops.

But if I was you, I would nab it and register it, if it truly has been there for that long.

Technically the guy that was owed rent by the bikes owner now owns it... But I doubt he knows its there.

NB: you can buy a new registration to put on it for £175 (legally). That way if the guy came back he probably wouldn't suspect it.

However, all the above is dreadfully immoral, even if it is within the law. So I so not suggest you do any of it... Very Happy
