Hi all,
My WD external hard drive went tits up recently, and it turns out that it's just the card thing between the hard drive unit, and the usb/power ports.
So I think I have a few options.
1 - to get a replacement card thing
2- to get a eSATA dock station
3 - to get a lead which does the same job as the dock station
4 - put the hard drive permanently into my PC
I am going to get a new external hard drive, so I don't mind it being forever inside my pc.
Also, what would be more recommended, a external HDD which uses a power cable and usb cable, or one which just uses a USB cable?
Any links to products you know to be good would be appreciated.

eSATA is by far the fastest, most efficient way to connect a drive if you have the ports to do it. Next comes firewire then USB. eSATA doesn't yet bus power though.
As for whether the drive is bus powered down the data cable or not, it doesn't matter in terms of the mechanics/operation of the drive - it's a matter of convenience. The only thing is that 2.5 inch form factor drives are the only ones that can be powered in this way whilst 5.25 inch drives need external power as they draw more voltage and current than USB/firewire can provide.
So, USB is fine for archiving/backing up etc whilst firewire and eSATA are way better for real time applications like video editing and music production, to name a few, where you need to access lots of data quickly whilst not tieing up the host CPU with the task of transferring it (which USB unfortunately does).
I personally love the Lacie Rugged series drives which we use at work in a media department of a university (we bought 20). They are bus powered so you just need the one cable and are very very tough. We use the firewire 7200rpm model, which runs amazingly silent, but they also make USB and eSATA versions. https://www.lacie.com/uk/products/range.htm?id=10036  I'm sure others will chime in with recomendations too though.
