Sorry to be posting in this section but it seems to be the most relevant for my question...
I'm looking to go across the dartford crossing on my little 125cc (still on L's) Just wondering the speed limit (I think it's 50mph) and if I am even allowed on it I know its an A road so I can go on it with the L's but I don't know if they will consider it too dangerous? Thanks in advance and any advice would be appreciated Very Happy

Its 50mph, 30mph as you get closer to the tolls. You'll be fine as long as you don't end up on the M25 or M11

Yep I did it many a time on my RXS100, watch out for crosswinds!

It's fine, but you've got to come off the first exit, ie before the road merges back down to 4 lanes (out of the bedlam) as otherwise you'll be on the M25 and thus illegal.

With that in mind, I'd stay as far left as possible when going to the tolls.

Thanks all for the replies. Unfortunately my friends decided to go at peak times and having never tackled many major roads before I've opted out and decided to get a lift with a friend I don't fancy getting squished by a big lorry in traffic but I will hopefully try the tunnel soon Very Happy

You'll have to get experience one day and the best way is to just do it. its not bad at all

I think i'd rather use the right lanes than the left ones at the Dartford tolls, the inside lanes are all used by HGVs, ours and foreign LHD ones all trying to find a good lane, one that takes cash or tags or whatever they need and therefore paying less attention to things around them, not a great place for an inexperienced person on a little bike to be. Head for the right then once through the tolls merge back to left to come off with the non-motorway traffic.

Can't say I agree - if we're talking inexperience, cutting back across the best part of, what, 6 lanes of toll booths to get off first exit, which is probably less than 200 yards....

I went over the bridge last year with a nervous learner on a 125. The traffic was gridlocked so we had to filter. She managed it no problem. The gaps between the cars are pretty wide. I wouldn't worry about sidewinds it's not too bad at Dartford.

Join it from the A13 roundabout, keep to the left pair of lanes, use the leftmost tollbooth that is open.

When leaving the tollbooth you HAVE to aim straight for the ramp right in front of you, as this is the only exit you can take if you want to avoid the motorway.

You big baby Razz when it's the most busy is when it's most fun to barge your way to the front - it's not dangerous because the other vehicles around you are hardly moving and the langes are massive.

I've crossed the bridge and tunnel probably 50 times now already on my 125cc bike with L plates.

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

I've lost count of the amount of times I've been over the bridge in the last 15 years. Doesn't help I've lived within 5 miles of both sides of it, I guess Exclamation

Still hate it, it's the one place that no matter what the time of day or night, regardless of everything else around it flowing nicely, it'll still be bloody gridlock for no apparent reason. Hate it hate it hate it

Bad at busy times with stupidly long queues.
The only time I use it is when I am going to the ports or tunnel to go to France. My bike is in full on touring mode so cant filter easily and as a bike you have to go through the slower manned toll booth even though its free.

Watch out for the rather large catseyes when filtering.

Thumbs Up

Also, is it just me that thinks there's not a lot to stop you going over the edge...? Shifty Laughing

What are you riding a Ural combination towing a spares trailer and petrol bowser?!? Laughing

My fully loaded for two weeks camping and touring R1100GS with the global lids Beemer panniers has never had any issues filtering at Dartford - loadsa room. Smile
