Just got a letter through at work telling us that "according to our records, this property is still unlicenced, and you haven't told us that you dont need a TV licence"

Apperently they are taking legal action or some bollocks, we don't even have a TV here so is there anything they could do? Is it actualy the law that we need to tell them we dont need a telly licence?

Not that I really care, it doesn't concern me at all, just interested.

Ignore them.

Don't speak to them, don't call or write to them.

I just got my second 'oops you have forgot to renew your licence which ran out in February' letter.

It has been filed for my amusement.

I told them last August I didn't watch TV anymore, they even acknowledged my letter with a refund form!

Not wasting my time or energy telling them what I've already told them, they will continue to send letters to anyone who doesn't have a licence, as they assume that everyone must watch the dross on TV and so must owe them their extortion money.

It is up to them to prove you are watching live TV without a licence, not for you to prove you don't. Most of the time this is proved because the hapless person has admitted it to them.

In the event that they send a monkey round, DO NOT SPEAK TO THEM. DO NOT LET THEM IN.

They will try to act like they have rights like coppers, they don't. Close the door in their face.

That is one of the myths which TVL are happy to let people perpetuate, but legally have to rebuke on their website:

https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/

Quote:
You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.

You only need a a licence to watch live TV. For iplayer/catchup/on demand etc only you do not need one.

And according to the TV licencing people, also to record live telly.

Im in a shop so it would be a bit hard to stop them coming in through the massive open front Laughing

Still as I say, its not my problem, i'll pass the letter onto head office, was just wondering.

TV licensing monkeys (its a private company, I think Capita do it now.)

Anyway, what Mudskipper said. The TVL crowd have an infered right of access, basically, if you dont say otherwise then they have access. In order to refute it, all you have to do is say so.

There are a number of clips on youtube where people have filmed their interactions with TVL people, quite entertaining. Two stick in my mind, one where the TV licensing chap threatens the person filming and another where the guy gets his arse handed to him because he entered a block of flats under false pretences. Basically this old guy comes out and goes mental even although it was his neighbour who allegedly had no license.

Anyway, scummy people on a level with DCA's who whinge 'I'm only doing my job...' but still deserve a swift boot up the arse and told to piss off.

Thumbs Up

Just watched a few youtube vids. The licencing officers soon leave when they realise they are being videod. One video has the lad asking questions and saying why do I need a licence. The officer asks him do you watch tele and he says not particularly. All you can hear in the background is the ending credits to Eastenders lol.

One can only assume he's watching it via the BBC I player...

www.tpuc.org has some great stuff about the TV license and using "no contract return to sender"

very interesting that piece about "live" tv. just goes to show you have read the terms very very carefully.

I never bought a license for over 20 years, and whenever they would come to the door i'd just tell them to fuck off and get a warrant if they want to come in. They never did come back with a warrant, although i would keep getting hassled until i moved to another address, whereby i would get a respite period and then it would all start again.
Which convinced me that they really have no real power and just work on scare tactics.
I do have a license now, but only because i've become less eager have shouting matches with these agencys and just prefer a quiet life without these cunts calling round constantly.
So the fuckers will make you buy a license at some time in your life just by sheer persistance.

I have a license too, but only because I watch the BBC's output and believe (if you put all the non-apolitical shenanigans to one side) some of it is quite good.

Also, I think having a number of channels where you're guaranteed not seeing some irritating DFS or god for-fucking-forbid; that moronic, cretinous, criminally mind numbingly stupid, from-the-mind-of-an-utter-twat Halifax advert.

I find TV ad's where they have actors pretending to be real people offensive and that halifax ad actually makes me angry.

Anyway, I digress.

I think the BBC channels should be pay per view. Then people would have the option of opting out of the TV license system. Why the fuck should people be forced to pay for channels whether you watch them or not just because you have a TV. Its like a compulsary poll tax. My newsagent doesn't give me a bill for daily papers and say 'well you could have had them delivered if you wanted to'.
The BBC should either fund itself by advertising or give people the choice not to watch their channels, but still have a TV for privately funded channels.

I just have BT Vision box and my playstation connected to my Tv and cause the ariel socket is on the other side of the room from all the plugs I've never bothered my arse to get one long enough to watch live tv-and as per the other replies in this thread this means you don't need one.

Got several letters in the first few months of moving into the place but then nowt. Then one day a chap appears at my door saying they are wondering why I don't have a licence. I politely told him I was led to believe you didn't need one if you don't watch/record live tv. He politely said 'that's fine, all I needed to know' then he left.

True story, only told to highlight some of them aren't total c-units!

(kinda wish I did buy one now though-with the imminant closure of 6music I'd at least feel like I had some right to feel betrayed...although we've got one of the performing rights licenses at work so maybe that kinda counts?)

Correction. All they can do is send whinging letters and ASK if they can come in to inspect the premesis.

If they can't show you have been watching TV without a licence, they can do a sum total of fuck all.

My advice. Take all communications from TV licencing, throw them in the bin and think no more of it. If they come round to visit, it's up to you if you want to let them in or not. Bearing in mind they are private individuals who have been contracted to go collect some fines in return for a cut of them, I'd generally go for 'not'.

Remember those detector vans they used to use? There was a program on Radio4 where they admitted that the things never actually worked Mr. Green

They worked beautifully. They just had to drive one up and down a street and next day, everyone would rush out and buy a TV licence.

Not bad for the price of a clapped out old transit van and a few quids worth of vinyl graphics.

I get at least one letter a month from them, over the last twelve years, of various types. They all go in the fireplace.

Before the mrs moved in. I didn't watch much tv, so decided to get rid of the tv and save the license fee.

When I didn't renew the licence, rather than phoning them and explaining that I'm away from home often and don't have TV anymore. I thought I would have some fun and just see what they did.

I kept getting letters and just ignored them. I finally had a visit and rather than open door, I opened an upstairs window to talk to him, the guy said:

"is there a tv on the premises"

me:

"get the fuck off my property"

him:

We can detect if you use a tv and if you haven't got a license we can take you to court"

me:

"whatever, bye"

They kept doing surprise visits every few weeks after that, they were certain I had a tv although I didn't. Each time they came I just told them to go away.
They then sent some nasty letters which I ignored.

Not long after my mrs moved in so I got a tv and paid for a licence.

It does piss me off, they won't believe you that you don't watch tv and they constantly harass you, either by letter or someone at your door.
Just because you don't watch tv, why do they think it's o.k to constantly harass you.

From learning about demodulation at university, your TV (analogue at least, not sure about digital) does produce a signal when it receives and demodulates the signal. With the right equipment you could pick it up, however I doubt you'd be able to pin point which house it was, and therefore it is useless. And it would be pretty simple to get round by using the correct filter too.

At university last year, I continually got letters threatening to take me to court, like everyone said bin them. They are just trying to scare people into buying one.

When I was in my first year of uni I didn't have a license, I didn't have a TV so it wasn't a big deal for me Laughing. They would send me tons of letters telling me to get a license, and would give me dates they were going to come inspect my property but they never showed up. I have one at the moment but I'm in a shared house and there are a few TVs here so it makes sense in a way. But soon as I live in my own place, I won't have a license, if I do get a TV it won't get connected to an aerial..
