Usually it's a con.

Usually free domains means the hosting company register it for themself. Problem being ofcourse that as they own it they can stop you moving to a different hosting company later.

Also free hosting won't have any kind of an sla so it can be as slow and crap as they like. I'd expect any company that offers it to completly overload their servers and for the sites to be quite slow.

Also if anything goes wrong they'll be in no rush to fix it for you.

If you buy your own domain i could always stick it on my server for you! What do you need. Is it just going to be a plain HTML website?

For £45 a year for a fairly decent hosting and domain package, it isn't too much if you are serious about setting up a website.

If it is just for fun, then you will get ads with free ones.
