What's the deal with motorbikes and parking nowadays?

Woke up this morning to find a parking ticket on my bike. It's a residential road and you have to display residents permit in your car if you want to park there. I actually live here so I could apply for a permit but I assumed I wouldn't need one as there's nowhere to display a permit on a bike.

So I've got this ticket, its only £35 if I pay within 14 days but it does say on the ticket

"parking in a residents or shared use parking place or zone without clearly displaying either a permit or voucher or pay and display ticket issue for that place."

I've talked to traffic wardens at pay and display places about it and they've always said "no you don't have to pay, where would you display it?"

So.. any grounds to appeal based on being unable to display the permit? It'd just get nicked. Or should I just pay the £35 early cause otherwise it'll turn into £70.

Don't pay, dispute it. I have got off a couple in London, it's hard work but stick at it with them.

Do you live in London?
In London it's pretty expected you'll get done on a bike and you definitely do have to have residents permits etc. In other parts of the country it's generally not a problem if you stay out of the way.

I'm in nottingham at the moment. Been here 8 months with no problems, all of a sudden got this ticket today.

How do you know you have to have a permit? I assume there's a sign. What does the sign say? Often you can dispute the wording. For instance, if it says you have to display a permit "when leaving the vehicle" etc then there's a legal precedent that you don't have to pay (they can't prove there wasn't a permit there at the time of 'leaving' the bike). Also, if it says you have to display one "on a car" etc and doesn't explicitly say "all vehicles" or "including...motorbikes" then again, there's a loophole. Find out what the sign says and post it on here as there may be a way out of it.

(That's assuming you don't give your name/vehicle details when buying a permit, or assuming they can be used on more than one vehicle.)

Whenever you get a ticket your first port of call should always be to dispute it.

The 14 days is reset so even once disputed if you don't take it any further you can still pay the cheap price for 14 days from the councils reply.

I have disputed every ticket i've received (car and bike) and the councils have always dropped the case.

The sign just says

"permit holders only. Mon-Sat 8am-6pm"

EDIT* Yandy Yay, that seems pretty conclusive! That site says that I can park in residential areas for as long as I want!

I'll send them an email disputing it, what should I say? Is it best to focus just on one thing? Or should I mention a few things, namely that website, the fact that its impossible to display a permit on a bike, the fact that I've been here for 8 months with no problems.

Any of that I shouldn't include? Anything else I should?

Yes I think he did! I've sent off an email basically telling them they're plonkers and can't read their own website.

Dispute it, don't mention the 8 months thing as that could cause more trouble.
Mention the site and tell them you checked on the site which says you can park there, include a print out and a photo of your hand giving the tossers the bird.

I had a parking tosser tell me i was obstructing the road when delivering something in Salisbury and started giving me a ticket, i took it, screwed it up and threw it at him while shouting loads of abuse including stick it up your arse you fking jobsworth cnut, i'd had a fairly bad day up to then and i kind of snapped.

Wrote to council with reg number, location and photo of the double yellow showing no end stop bars and stating no legally required stop bar = no legally issued ticket and i await their reply confirming it will be canceled. It wasn't asking it was telling.

Few days letter they decide 'on this occasion' they would cancel the ticket Thumbs Up

If it's pay and display say you did but the ticket must have been nicked / blown away.

Basically the advice is unless the ticket is issued by the council or the plod then dont pay. Private parking companies issue tickets that are not legally enforceable, their business model is based on ignorance of the law and fear of prosecution/bailiffs.
