Split links - ever actually had one fail?

I have heard all the scare stories before, but has anyone actually had the split link itself fail??

Please no 'I wouldn't ride a split link coz it kills kittens' boo-locks, I am after people that have had a split link fail/cause problems.

Never had one fail, have lost the split clip before but the side plate stayed on the link.

Ok i ride a low powered bike, but i love my split link. +20 off and ons for cleaning etc and no problems. Bike has regular pillion usage and luggage.

Also interseted in split link failures.

Just bought a new one for my D.I.D 520NZ. And it seems a tighter fit. i.e have to use mole grips to push the plate on so i can locate the clip into the recesses on the pins.

Wouldn't use one on a high powered machine like an R6 tho

Possibly, but the original chain was also DID, but about 2mm wider. Suspect the previous owner was fedup of wrecked chains caused by the pulses...Anyway we digress.

Not for me. Had a few chains snap over the years (3 I can think of), but none going at the split link (2 weren't split link chains).

Iris chains are shit, l had a new one with only 80 miles on it snap and smash its way into the crank case, luckly it was only a NC24 so no great loss.

Used a split link for ages on the last GPZ500 we had. The FZ750 has had a split link on for much of its life.

Next question is - for those that have had a failure, what did you attribute it to?


i.e.
was it the retaining clip came off?
was it the ins snapped?
was it the side plating snapped?

Also, what exact make and model chain was it?

Not a clue on who'd made the chain, as this was years ago on my 1989 Suzuki GSXF750

The retaining clip came off (it was on firmly when I left home) after 5 miles riding. I can only assume with it went the plate, leaving the pins with no support- Chain went through the casing, removing some small pin thing that went into the engine too.

I've had 3 split links fail at speed. One was on a very worn chain, the other two were not.

I have twice noticed the keeper plate has gone AWOL before disaster ensued.

On the ones that broke, the whole link was gone on one of them. The keeper plate was missing and the link was snapped on the other two (so no way of telling which went first).

Two snapped DID o-rings, one snapped EK heavy duty. Links AWOL on an EK heavy duty and a regina heavy duty.

As you might imagine, I was getting pretty paranoid about fitting them properly by the end. Scotoiler fitted for all but one. The last three (two AWOL plates and a snappage) I lockwired the keeper plate too.

I will not use a split link on anything bigger than a 125 from now on.

I have had one fail from an IRIS chain that was well maintained on my 125. It snapped on the rear side at the rivet point on the side plate, not where the clip was. I attribute it to a poor quality chain. It wasn't worn, had loads left on the adjusters and was barely 8'000 miles old. Had one on the original DID OEM chain that never failed - the chain wore out after 15'000 miles anyway.

Odd Stinkwheel, I never had any trouble with split link chains. I ran them on my GSXR11s, FJ1200 and GPz1100S and all lasted fine.

Perhaps you need to avoid the dragracing!
