Hey folks,

Looking for second opinions on this one please.

When the engine has warmed up I notice a ticking/clicky sound that's coming from the top end. It's not there when the engine is cold. At first I thought it was the tappets, but I am now pretty certain it's not as I've checked and re-checked the clearances and they are set perfectly. I'm also pretty sure it's not the exhaust header blowing as when I hold a screwdriver at various points around the engine case I can hear it mostly around the right hand side of the cam chain sprocket cover (top of the engine, left hand side of the bike).

That's where the CCT is, so my attention has now turned to that, especially after I was told by a mechanic that they commonly wear out on small cc bikes... I've never taken one out/inspected one before but it looks simple enough and possible to do whilst the engine is still in the frame so I'm willing to give it a go. I would also perhaps ask if 24'000 miles is a lot for a CCT and that I should look at replacing it anyway as a matter of course? I'm also wondering if it's just another case of paranoia and if anyone else here has a YBR, does their engine sound 'clicky' after warming up?

Cheers!

I had a similair noise that i thought was the tappets, i adjusted them about 6 times lol, but it was the fuel injector. Although you have put a lot more miles on yours than me, it shouldnt be to hard to whip out and have a looksy. It could just be slighty tappy tappets as they seem to have a biggish range of adjustment.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply. My YBR is the carb model so no fuel injector to look at... carb seems fine and the noise isn't coming from it. I don't hear the clicking when I put the screwdriver around the tappet cover areas of the engine and clearances are adjusted to the smaller end of manufacturer's spec, so I'd expect them to be nice and quiet. As I say, perhaps the engine always did this and I just didn't notice - as I am getting more and more into bike mechanics I find I'm a lot more attentive of things I'd usually pay no attention to or not notice at all. Also, I'm not noticing any loss of power or poor running at all, and the spark plug looks good - it's an iridium one, just over 4'000 miles old with a slight tan colour with no deposits or oil fouling at all. New air filter as well and fuel filter is also good.

im guessing that CCTs are pretty similar across the board so i'll say if it is the CCT i wouldnt expect a clicky/tappy sound.. it'll be more like 2 skeletons having sex in a metal tin.. its bloody loud!

probably a good idea to check valve clearances

Hi mate,
Did you figure out what was wrong? was it the tensioner?

I'm still having trouble with mine and its looking like a strip down is likely Shocked , So i'm hoping that its the tensioner gone for a simple fix Laughing
Thanks

Not yet, I've had the gaskets on order for the last week or so and I think they've arrived so I can whip the CCT off and inspect it tonight hopefully!

UPDATE: Got the CCT out and the plunger seems to retract and extend smoothly when turning the screw. Spring does not feel weak, so I worked it in/out a few times, and reset it. We shall see how it goes tomorrow on the commute. TBH I'm still not 100% sure if the engine has always been a little bit clicky and I'm only noticing it because I'm paying more attention to it.
