I thought I had a pretty clear idea, that this newspaper seller caught up in the protests in london with aggressive policing, was unlawful killing.
Its actually quite a bit worse that I thought though.
As he was assaulted twice on two separate occasions by different groups of officers.
The accounts in the article are far more graphic than the what we were originally told.
The guilty police officer, had previously quit one police force to escape disciplinary action, took a pension, then joined another force ! Presumably still drawing the pension from the first force !
The pathologist had been shockingly negligent in the past resulting in an obvious murder being classed as accidental death, with the murderer going on to kill again twice.
Its a good read if you enjoy a bit of moral outrage.

Yeah but you come to expect that.
It's the fact that its just been accepted as one of those thing, which amazes me.
In other countries(Greece for one), if an innocent bystander was killed by a police officer, there would be an outcry, and policemen would be in fear for their lives for a few weeks at least.
To be fair, there is a lot in that wikipedia article that makes you realise how culpable the police were, when at the time it was made out that some guy with a heart condition had received a bit of a shove to the back and fallen over.
At least the police officer who assaulted someone at a protest about tomlinson did get charged. Trial in progress.
I also thought this was pretty telling.
On 11 January 2008, the Police Action Law Group (PALG), over 100 lawyers who specialize in police complaints, resigned from the IPCC's advisory body, citing a failure to provide adequate oversight; a pattern of favouritism towards the police, with complaints being turned down despite strong evidence; indifference and rudeness towards complainants; delays stretching over several years in some cases; and key decisions being made by managers with little or no legal training or relevant experience. They wrote to Hardwick that there was "increasing dismay and disillusionment" at the "consistently poor quality of decision-making at all levels of the IPCC."
and this
Over 185 complaints were received by the IPCC about the policing of the protests, 90 of them about the use of force, 52 of them about police tactics.
only one was ever charged, one i mentioned above.
so 1 man was killed, but many more unlawfully assaulted, i dont believe 89 allegations were completely unfounded, and thats just the people who bothered to make any allegations ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

That is fucking mental.
I remember watching this at the time, and how clearly unneccessary his actions were, I remember hearing about his trial a couple of weeks ago on the radio, and thinking to myself that he will get his comuppance.
How he has been acquitted is beyond me.
IIRC sickpup has knowledge of this guy, or rather knows that he has a history of similar alledged unsavoury events which he was also cleared.
Crazy. |

If anyone has watched some of those Police Wars / Street Wars / Cameras following cops on the streets programmes, as I do - you will see a fair amount of police harassment, some of it is minor, and they do often provoke pissheads to kick off, and then they arrest them.
It's wasteful really, because all that happens is they go back to the nick, overnight in the cell and get a fine for drunk and disorderly or swearing at the police, or some minor crap. And for what gain, nothing...its a waste of resource/time/money.
Everyone knows there is little point trying to reason with a drunk. Especially a gobby one. So why do they expect respect and order..?
I do really wonder where we are going to end up...this country is getting more and more aggressive, in all walks of life...in people you expect to uphold the law and make us sleep soundly in our beds at night...*shakes head* Not good. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

This is very sad and upsetting, and further undermines my faith in the establishment and legal system.
I thought things were poor in the 80s when Thatcher sanctioned violence against those defending their right to work, but this just scares me silly.
It's like the USA pre-civil rights, in fact I think it's worse because they've at least made some progress since then, whereas we appear to be going backwards.
It's a good job it's just one bad egg, hey? ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |
