Hey guys,

Finally beginning to get the bike useful after a rebuild and various other fixes, next on the list is the speedo.

The odometer works and counts up, but the speedo itself does nothing. The speedo's analogue, but the cable to it looks digital? I wouldn't quote me on that, but I haven't been able to have a proper look. S'on the agenda for tomorrow.

Unfortunately the headlight fairing, which is attached to the speedo, looks a pain to get off. Still, worth a shot.

Secondly, if all else fails, are aftermarket speedo's legal and MOT-passable? Had a look on eBay, but 160mph cut-off seems a bit OTT for a 50cc tbh.

Thanks!

where is the speedo attached to wheel? or gearbox (highly unlikely)
try unscrewing from wheel check the end out spin with a drill if poss. then same at other end.
just to let you no if its digital there will be a series of conector blox or 1 if old style it will be cable. if it is connector blox scrap my 1st idea. just 4 reference what bike is it?

Okay took the headlight and fairing off today, speedo cable is attached to wheel. Seems digital, just a group of 3 cables. Around 5/6 cables also going into speedo, guessing those are the like status indicators.

I'm guessing because the odo works it's the mechanism in the speedo itself?

It's a 'Generic Trigger SM50'. Haha.

Could still be the speed sensor part in the wheel, the odometer runs from another cable most likely coming out of your crank case.

Remove the speedo cable from the speedo then take the speedo sensor part from the front wheel and spin it v quick, does the speedo end of the cable turn?

Next replace the speedo end of the cable and remove the sensor end, spin that v quickly (i.e. using a battery drill) does the speedo register speed?

If neither works, your cable is shafted. If the speedo turns then the speed sensor is likely shafted and if the cable turns with the speed sensor but the speedo doesnt register speed then the speedo is likely shafted.

Hopefully, the cable is bust or one of the connections at either end it bust and itll be cheap to replace

Photos help Thumbs Up

Ah:

Your speedo is V unlikely to be digital if the sensor is on the wheel Very Happy

Again, photos help Thumbs Up

As an update, fixed pretty much everything else on the bike apart from this.

I've had the entire front assembly off, and still can't get the speedo to work. Unfortunately the odometer isn't working either now, so I suspect that's my fault from knocking something.

The cable from the wheel attatches to a connector into the clocks, it's got three wires coming out of it. I'll grab some pictures tomorrow.

I rang up about new clocks but at £147quid, just no. Spent a ridiculous amount on the bike already.

I'd like to get the odometer working at least, it might be the cable I guess. How specific are they to the bike?
