Racing as a hobby?

I'm thinking about starting racing as a hobby, because the urge to constantly ride at the limit is hardly road practical =(
at the same time, I need something cheap and accessable
What would you recommend racing? I love my 2 strokes, but class limits, Licenses and all sorts confuse me sometimes... I could do with a prod in the right direction.
I dont really want to ride anything bigger than a 250.
Someone reccomended MZ racing, but I dont know...

For trackdays you do not need an ACU licence.

Indeed, the vast majority of trackday companies will not accept one.

You need a normal road licence to do trackdays.

I don't know if this is what you're thinking of, but I've just taken up sprinting. I've wanted to race bikes for a long time but to be honest I'm not nearly good enough to justify spending the money track 'road' racing costs. But for sprinting, you just need an ACU license, can use your roadbike, leathers, boots and helmet. May not do it for you, but for me for now it's satisfied my desire to ride bikes competitively. And if you want to go around corners, the National Hillclimbing Association seems similarly easy to get into it.

You need to do a lot of research.

Have you got a full road licence? Even if its 33bhp? if not, this is your first priority.

See, the thing about getting onto a trackday using an ACU licence (which I presume you were enquiring about cos you don't have a road licence) is that they're not gonna let you out in anything but the fast group.

My mate does Black Flag Racing, as a hobby, when he can afford it. Not this year unfortunately, due to money and trying to relocate home and job...but hopefully he'll be back to it soon. He's does pretty good.

A friend of mine races as a hobby. He has a CB500, and runs with Thundersport IIRC. Trouble is it costs him about 2 - 3 grand a year to do.

The bikes can be picked up for about £500 if you know where to look

As said, a good start would be a track day, just to get you used to riding on a track
