I'm thinking of taking the Hornet touring around Scotland (or perhaps England) this summer, but the prices of pannier/topboxes racks are rather steep. I don't mind the cost of the boxes/panniers themselves, but the racks are a bit much, especially as I'm considering a new bike this year. Can anyone recommend any good cheap sites for racks and boxes?

Also, given the cost, I'm thinking about just going with one or t'other rather than both panniers and topbox. Do you think a topbox (and tank bag) would be sufficient luggage space for a few days to a week's touring?

If money is tight you can use soft luggage on the hornet, go out for a run and put your hand on the heat shield you'll find the outer bit of the exhaust doesn't get hot so there are no issues with soft luggage.
Just make sure it can't move to cover the outlet. Then you could set fire to your pants.

For my first tour on my Hornet I used a Renntec sports rack and Givi roll bag. I was camping solo so took a tent and sleeping bag. All my clothes fitted into the bag along with a sleeping bag. The tent I strapped to my givi bag.
This worked okay but bit tight on space.
I spent out for the next year and got some Givi E41 hard panniers and case holder from SW Motech.
This setup worked okayish, bit of handlebar oscillation on deceleration, somrething I have to be aware of.

I too have just booked a trip into Europe, going on my Hornet with the other half so luggage options are limited.

We're getting the ferry to the Hook of Holland, then working our way up to Sweden (Stromstad) through Germany and Denmark.

So far I've got a tank cover so will get a tank bag to attach to it. I've been looking at racks and top boxes and can't find a cost-effective one. I'll probably have to get some soft panniers but would really like a top box for security, plus the missus thinks she would feel more secure with something behind her!

Did you find anything of any use?

I did similar. I originally had a Renntec sports back on my Diversion to which I bungied my tent and roll bag. Oxford 'first time' throwover soft panniers completed the set up. Worked really well.

Following year as I started to do more camping trips and rallies and stuff I bit the bullet and bought some hard luggage (givi rack with E21 side cases and E45 top case). Cost a fair bit but two years on I think it has been money well spent. I use them all the time for shopping and beer runs and stuff! The rack is a bit ugly, but so is the Diversion so doesn't matter.
