Barry Sheerman: “If you have a husband, boyfriend or son who wants to get a motorbike, please try and persuade them to get something with four wheels instead.”

Barry Sheerman: “The widow-makers and orphan-makers are the people who drive such vehicles and are killed. That is disgraceful in a civilised society.”

Barry Sheerman: “I think it’s my job as a politician to say to some young woman, who’s married a man and she’s got two small children, that the most dangerous thing her husband can do is probably drive a motorcycle."

Barry Sheerman: “I would always be worried about motorcycle travel, people who are travelling on motorcycles, whatever the [casualty] rate.”

I think the fact he is Labour is irrelevant as it is a personal opinion, I suspect there are MP's of other parties that also think the same.

There are some odd people in this world, he is just another.

I am naive to have expected better of an MP than stupid quotes like ' In two years nearly as many people are killed in motorbike crashes as British soldiers killed in combat in the last 40 years.'

You know what that means guys, cars are more dangerous than motorbikes.

Also, think how dangerous those soldiers are to other people compared to motorcyclists!!!!

It's my choice whether I ride a bike or not.

My girlfriend/family telling me otherwise will not stop me.

It's not that bad. And I for one enjoy it more than I care about the risks.

I'm selfish? Loved ones can be selfish for not letting you do what you want. 2 sides of the same coin.

Selfish eh?

What about this: I can't afford to commute to my job by any other means. The bike is the only way I can do it and afford to feed my family. I learnt to ride out of necessity - cheap transport for long distances (30 miles each way in my case). The train would cost 3x as much and a car would be much more expensive. Make the car cost the same as my bike in terms of running/tax/insurance etc and I'll drive. Middle Finger

A quick google and I found this

Barry Sheerman MP website Have your say

So I sent him this:
Quote:
Dear Barry

After reading your comments about motorcyclists being "Orphan Makers" I must say I'm rather offended, I have had a total of 3 motorcycle accidents myself and all of them have been proven to be the DRIVERS FAULT.

Could you please take your bullshit nanny state opinions and politics to another country that really cares what you think, cause lets be honest your an MP (massive prick), so how much did you claim on gay porn and butt plugs in the expenses scandal?

I really think your narrow minded vision of a country full of sardine cans on wheels is rather boring, traffic congestion is at an all time high, I have a right to own and use a motorcycle and choose to do so because bikes don't cause congestion.

I do not own a car and probably never will, this is my choice and nothing any member of my family could say would ever change that.

Have you ever owned a motorbike? Probably not given your comments, maybe you should grow a spine and a pair of balls and try it, you might actually like it!

Or maybe in future keep your narrow minded thoughts to yourself.

Good luck in the election, I and most of the people I know are going to vote conservative seeing as Labour are a bunch of thieving tax whores who love nothing more than lining their own pockets.

Farewell

A Biker

I think the fact you had 3 accidents, would support his case.

It is dangerous riding a motorbike. I dont think he is saying motorcyclists are responsible for the accidents, but the fact is you are more vulnerable on a bike.

Motorbikes are fun, but what would be a minor prang between two cars, would involve injusry between a motorbike and a car.

However, rather than rush hour traffic being clogged with cars with one person in, it would be far more sensible if more people commuted by motorbike.

We might not agree with him, but at least he appears to be being open and honest with his opinion here.

Hi

Suppose possible, but I would suspect the number who ride bikes are wouldn't vote for him now at all are probably way higher than the small number who would be swayed in favour of him from what he has said.

All the best

You're rather offended but then proceed to hurl every expletive you can muster at him and offer a really poorly thought out response to his comments. You did your side of the argument more harm than good. Oh and you and all your mates have admitted to voting conservative as if it's a good idea Rolling Eyes

And you totally miss his point to top it all off, 3 accidents, who care's who's fault they were, the accidents just support his argument that being on a bike is dangerous, he never mentioned biker's riding is the cause of the danger.

Damn, you suck.

LOL - can't believe people getting so uppity about this.

He's just voiced his opinion - his opinion is as valid as yours, MP or otherwise, and statistically he's right; riding a motorcycle is dangerous

Ironically the fact you're writing to him to tell him you've had 3 accidents probably speaks for itself that motorcycling is dangerous, doesn't it Rolling Eyes Wink

And where in the article does he even make a reference to wanting to ban motorcycle use - does he? So what's nanny state about it? The only near on reference is that he's mentioned that the death rate is unacceptably high, which TBH he's right on - isn't he? Wouldn't it be nicer if no motorcyclists died?

Just noticed there's a facebook page been started so that people DON'T vote Labour just because one MP voices a valid opinion on something. Fuck me if you're that sad to let something like that affect your politics then this country's fucked and then some Confused

there was a debate going on at the time, so the arguement may have come up about more people starting to turn to bikes,

its also probably been taken well out of context, we are talking about a govenment which will chuck its ideas in the bin for a minority vote, so wouldnt set out to alienate bikers..

Not so sure on that point. They quite happily set out to alienate those who hunt for a small minority vote.

I thought in national surveys 75% of people supported the fox hunting ban.

I hope Conservative do get in, in a way, as you just know that all the working class anti Labour, conservative voters are just going to get stuffed over under Conservative and be eating there words.
The normal response is " well they can't do a worse job then Labour are now".
I bet they bloody can Laughing

Exactly, they'll take lots of surveys asking very slightly different questions or in different places, asking different types of people and choose the one that gives the figures that suit their cause.

One thing that really gets me is all these questionnaires, surveys and flyers you get that ask all sorts but then there is always the question tucked in:
"Regardless of how you intend to vote who would you rather see as the next prime minister, Gordon Brown or David Cameron?"

It's clear statistic manipulation, they can then get a nice Sun headline saying 75% of people want David Cameron as the next PM Rolling Eyes If I see questions like that in anything I just don't bother with the entire survey.
