Got a bit of a problem with my laptop. When I start it up and you see the windows XP logo it takes like 3-6 mins for it to actually load windows, and then it's really sluggish and freezes all the time. Bear in mind this is a brand new hardrive that was only upgraded about 1 month ago. It normally takes about -1 minute from power on to logging in, anybody got any ideas why it's started to take so long and freeze up all the time?

I've stupidly deleted all my system restore points too Twisted Evil I ran spybot search and destroy and all it detected was spy cookies so I deleted them, can anyone recommend another anti-virus freeware?

SUPERAnti spyware
Malware malbytes whatever
Microsoft Secuirty Essentials

If you run those 3 and it is still slow, it ain't spyware, malware or a virus.

Run CCleaner
Clean the registry aswell

Go start run, "msconfig" look in the startup tab and make sure the only things ticked are essential and not random bollocks you have installed. If you are unsure of one, google it first to make sure it is not a system operation.

Check to all that, still no luck! I've run all the anti-virus stuff and nothing was detected at all which is what I expected (I only stick to websites I know Razz ).

There was a lot of stuff in the startup area of the config place that I removed (adobe reader, winamp etc) so that's gone..

I used CCleaner to do a registry clean and quick sweep of my PC.

And it's still slow and sluggish as fuck, any more suggestions?

Windows XP was always slow to load up after a while, yet people still think it is the best thing since sliced bread.

This is 100% not normal and I've been using XP for years? All I've done recently is download a ton of music (only 4GB).

I've just done a defrag and also CHKDSK repair which found a couple of errors but it's stil the same, quite annoyed because I've spent the best part of this afternoon waiting to see if they work.

I might just have to format, what a fucking pain, anymore suggestions?

Did you run the spyware checks in Safe Mode?

Try to find BootVis (if it's still available - i think it's made my Microsoft). It's supposed to speed up XP's boot and seemed to do the job nicely for me.

I'll try the spyware checks in safe mode now and also given bootvis a download...

Reformatting will be a last option as I've got tons to back up and I spent DAYS trying to finding XP drivers for this crappy Vista laptop...

see how I get on with the aove for now.

For a little bit of extra speed and free memory you can disable any unneeded services.

I did a format in the end it's fine now, I think it must have been due to a HDD fault or a driver or something, I've had nothing but problems with this shitty WD drive.

IMO it's still better than Vista and W7. I had Vista Premium on this laptop for 2 days before it got formatted and had XP Pro installed. And from what I've seen of W7 and read about it, it doesn't seem to me like I'm losing out on anything by still using XP.

Windows 7 is great, but my pc has alot of old tech in it so i cba with all the stress hence reinstalling XP. XP is great aswell, and didnt present too many problems for me unlike every vista pc i've ever endured the displeasure of.

this is why i don't like windows XP. will just suddenly do something and slow down for no apparent reason.
if you have a flash stick try running a live version of ubuntu or something. may me a hardware fault.

The windows xp setup has a "repair" option.
That's worked a few times when my xp's gone tits up.
You'll have to get some of the windows updates again after though.

Worth a try if it should happen again.

Do you need recovery discs or is that from F10 or something at startup?
I have discs for my laptop which is getting so slow booting I usually just hibernate it.

I think it's on the install disc.
Just pop it in and wait for your pc to boot from the disc and give you the install options.
Once it finds a previous windows on your harddrive it should offer you some different options for installation.

Thumbs Up Smile

Several years running that now and nary a problem. Apparently the protection level could be better vs some other programs, but I've yet to suffer virus damage with it and it updates at least twice daily. Even the workplace Kaspersky (that's supposedly class-leading and likes to knacker up the system for an hour a day just to make sure we know it) doesn't do that.

Plus Spybot SD to do an occasional (twice yearly) check + update of browser protections. NoScript and Flashblock for firefox. Hardware NAT firewall in router. Sorted.

XP is a touch slower to boot than when I first got the machine, even though it's nearly got 4x as much RAM and a 3x larger HDD (with the windows partition limited to the first 1/3rd), but it's probably something to do with the extra programs installed and general OS creeping decreptitude. It's been gradual. But it's far from awful, and it doesn't really happen much as I tend to Sleep or Hibernate it instead. It's far, far better than 9x was after only a year (this laptop is over 4yo, no reinstalls). Think the best I ever managed with 98 before going through the whole performance of reinstalling to cure massive issues was about 18 months.
(And it's a lot better than trying to load vista on a machine of similar performance... 7 allegedly fixes a lot of this... but whilst XP works fine for me and it costs about £100 to upgrade in a decent fashion, I'll pass)

XP always seems to take a nose dive after a while without a rebuilt.

Windows 7 is the best option it runs faster on my little netbook than XP ever did.

Neorion: Will that help with the stupid issue my work machine's having (and I didn't long clear off my laptop) where .NET framework won't update because of some file error?

Chris: If that was true, something was badly wrong with your XP install. Though I also know 7 does bring some performance boosts, XP itself shouldn't have dragged unless you were using something like the original EeePC (which was a total 3-legged dog).
