Right, where to start, basically I found out yesterday that i've been insured on the wrong bike for the last 3 months. When taking out my insurance I told them I have a YZF-R1 and somehow they managed to insure me on a Thunderace. The problem with this is that I have been paying installments of £90 and paid an initial deposit of £190 for nothing because I don't think that I would have been paid if my bike had been stolen or if I had smashed into somebody else because i'm /not/ actually insured on an R1.

Once I found out I wasn't insured I had a little rant at them and said I wanted my money back because technically I wasn't insured on what I had asked to be insured on. Now their argument is that they /would/ have paid me in the event of a claim and because of this i'm not going to get a penny. Now we all know what insurance companies are like and that there is a 99% chance they wouldn't have given me my money but i'm interested in what people think, do I have the right to ask for my money back?

The annoying thing is that after 3 months they hadn't even bothered to send my insurance certificate so I would have known sooner that I was insured on the wrong bike, this really got on my nerves because they were demanding I paid the £500 within seven days or my policy would be cancelled. I found these demands quite rich when they can't even be bothered to do a basic thing such as sending out a customers certificate or policy information.

Oh and one funny thing to come out of the whole thing is that the clown who first started the policy for me said he didn't know there was a difference between an R1 and Thunderace. I'm sorry but if you work for a 'Bike' insurance company you should know your basics. Obviously some companies don't believe in training their staff properly. Laughing

Please give me some advice as i've spent nearly £500 and not actually been covered on my insurance, i'd like to know if i can get some of my money back or if i'm stuffed. I'd also like to know and this is more for T.C but if I had been stopped by the Police in the last 3 months would I have been in trouble because of this mistake?

Cheers people.
Thumbs Up

I doubt you'd get your money back, but you should be able to get them to change the policy details to the correct bike and continue paying the repayments as usual. With any luck you'll get it at the same price as they quoted for the thunderace, considering it's their mistake and all.

Can I ask who the company is that made the error, just so that I don't give them a call in future, obviously!

I agree with Yams, every insurance policy I have ever had, including car policies, I have received a cover note with details of the insurance to be checked, signed and then returned.

With my most recent bike policy they had the registration of the bike incorrect, so I amended the cover note, and sent it back. Within a week I had my full insurance certificate.

Basically, if it has taken the company three months to send you a certificate then they're either taking too many coffee breaks, or there had been problems with your policy. Either way, you need to check that you can amend your policy, continue paying the installements you have been quoted and be thankful you didn't have an accident/receive a producer in the three months when your insurance has been rather *dubious.

It's MCE insurance who i've actually heard good things about in the past. For me however they have been total crap.

I know i've had problems with policies in the past and i've been able to sort them by filling in a few forms. Because of their laziness however I have not been able to do this.

I also agree with you on this but wouldn't it be standard practise to let the policy holder know if something is wrong with their policy so that the problems can be sorted, I think they've been having one too many coffee breaks.

I just found out today, while adding someone to my policy, that the license is wrong, it says something like "License: A1 Light" "CBT Passed: No" Thumbs Down
Been riding it nearly a year, not sure how badly it invalidates my insurance, but I best get it fixed, even though it was all explained to them quite clearly, they seemed to have messed it up.
Insurance companies are a bitch.
Just hope Danny can find me a good one when I get my new bike Smile Smile

As you have not suffered any loss or injury as a result of their mistake and the fact that they said you would have been covered, which you can't prove one way or another, I think you will find it extremely challenging to get any money out of them for the period covered.

The best you can expect is that they continue to insure you at the rate for the Thunderace if that is a lower premium for an R1.

I would also suggest you get a cover note, and then the full Insurance policy PDQ.

I believe that because they incorrectly quoted you (the Thunderace instead of the R1) they are oblidged to honour that original quote. Therefore they should amend your policy to state you own an R1 and not increase your payments.

It was their mistake and therefore they should meet any shortfall incurred by correcting your policy.

That's what i'm hoping, to be honest i'd rather them do that than give me my money back because I still need insurance at the end of the day. I'm thinking of writing a letter to them but cant think of the best way to word it.

Sad

Did they not send you a cover note whilst you were waiting for your proper insurance documents?

No nothing. Just a letter welcoming me to MCE. I tried to ring them a couple of times but was on hold for anything form 30mins to an hour so gave up. I know I should have hassled them more but I phoned them about 10 times and was starting to get pissed off with the whole thing. Sad

Don't you usually have to sign and return certain documents, such as confirmation that you agree to the terms, a copy of your licence, a garage clause (if applicable) etc? And don't you need to sign something in order to pay by installments?

As for not receiving a certificate - hassling the is the only way. I got a slack and it was only after I had my accident (about 7 months after starting the policy) that I realised that no only did I not have a certificate of insurance, but I also didn't receive any cover notes beyond the first one.

As Yams has suggested, just get them to change the bike on the policy and try to carry on as though nothing has happened.

Erm, the finance forms were done by another company, not at any point did I recieve any details about my policy. I asked them if they would need my lisence and they told me that only in the event of an accident. The whole thing is just wrong.

Hi

Doubt they could avoid paying up, and realistically I would think that they would now have to honour their quote after so long.

All the best
