Evening,

I've finally got a decent colour on my car after a few failed attempts using a rattle can from Halfords (Pretty damn close match) There's some areas of the newly painted area that are darker then the rest, what should i use to even this out?

So yes, any tips for evening the paint out & preparing for the clear coat. I have sand paper, polish, T-cut & cutting compound at my disposal.

Photo: You can see where the new paint is on the left (above the petrol cap) as there's no reflection.

Thanks.

Don't put any of that stuff near fresh rattle can paint. It's still hardening (and will be doing so for much longer than you can be bothered to wait) and it'll discolour either immediately or in a few weeks if you put anything on it. If it's a dry-looking edge you're trying to get rid of, spray it with thinners which will re-activate the paint and make it blend in better.

I'm not sure why some areas would be darker unless it's the undercoat showing through, in which case you want more paint on it, not less!

Thanks.

It's raining today so i guess that'll give it another day without disturbing it & hopefully will harden.

So after it's completely dry, will the clear coat make a big difference? I know it stands out a bit now as the paint isn't reflecting as much as the original paint.

Also, will there be any need for cutting compound after it's completely dry?

Thumbs Up

You know not to use any of that on the colour coat.. right?

& the clearcoat will change the colour a bit, lay it on then see how it looks

Clear coat should make it shine, the trick is to put as much paint on as you dare. Without making it run, obv. If it looks a bit funny now, it'll look a bit funny except lacquered once you put the clear coat on.

Again, it'll look dry around the edge, but you should overlap a couple of inches onto the old paint so you can polish that down later (couple of weeks) or spray it with thinners.

Thanks guys. I added the clear coat but the top coat wasn't a good match, maybe for a tiny area but for what i was doing it stood out too much. Thankfully i was able to sand back everything i'd added & the original coat was still intact with the original clear coat.

Just going to leave it now, let the new owner sort it out.
