CBR 125 or RS125

This decision is just too hard to make... For a first bike and commuter I'm thinking CBR, along with the reliability of a 4 stroke. Then again I'm thinking of having this bike for about 2 years, so perhaps I'll crave something faster like the Aprilia.

I just don't too much hassle with 2 stroke maintinence. My friend has an 07 RS 50 which he loves but he's getting a new bike soon, and he said he deffinatley wants a 4 stroke.

Can anyone with either an RS125 or CBR 125 give me their input of what they think? Anyone who has rode both for a period of time would be ideal.

Not bad, but nowhere near as good, just get the RS125, when it breaks, just buy another, get one for about £800.

RS125 all the way, I rode 125's when i was 17-19 and my only negative experiance was when I forgot to fill the oil resevoir on my Mito and seized it, i bought a 150 big bore kit. My friends RS125 ran on whatever he could afford service and oil wise, it lasted 18 months before he crashed and wrote it off. My 3rd 125 chum had a Aprilia AF1 (google it) and ragged the nuts of it for 2 full years without a problem.

If you think 2 strokes arent reliable then i disagree, if you think that you might break a 2 stroke then i agree they are more prone to user error and breakages.

Castrol TTS and allowing them to warm up will see a 2 stroke run forever plus they are more fun than a 4 stroke 125 and twice as powerful if you fettle with the power valve.

get an rs 125 pal but only if you know how to work on a bike and read a haynes manual these aprilias are very fast and alot of fun i should know i did own one for 3 years they will do 80 comfortaly and get there very quickly but they are unreliable unless you know how to fix them its a tough descision the rs125 is the best for performance looks and handling but the other 125 is a tought reliable 4 stroke that wont break constantly.
my conclusion:

if you have a deep pocket or you are mechanically minded and willing to work on your bike get the rs125


if you dont know your conrod from your big end then get the 4 stroke because they are simply bullet proof

only reason i went down the 4 stroke route was because i didnt trust any of the owners of the rs125's to have kept in good nick and couldnt find any dealers selling them in my price range, so i ended up with the yamaha r125 people say its not that fast but for my first bike its enough and ive had 82 at the top end so not that bad

If I were to do it again I'd buy the RS BUT make sure you do as much research on the bike as possible BEFORE buying

However if it's mainly commuting (I'm guessing town/city roads) the CBR will feel more at home.

For me the CBR was a perfect first bike, semi sporty riding position, easy to ride and quite fun and sounds quite nice with a Scorpion exhaust

If it's a commuter, I'd go for a no-nonsense 4t like the CG or YBR. 'Does what it says on the tin'. Easy enough to maintain for the basic service stuff and no fairings in the way when you do need to fix something one evening after you're totally knackered from a day of work and need the bike first thing the following morning. No fairings also means not having to fork out for expensive replacements if/when you crash it. I don't really see much point to sporty looking 4t 125's as they tend to look tiny and disproportioned IMO.

For fun and frollics get a 2t.

I had a CBR 125 for 16 months, and I'm 6 ft 1. Bit small for me to be honest, but it's a great little bike and I loved it.

For a first bike you really need reliability and I would definitely go for the CBR. You don't want a 2 stroke as a first bike, you want good mpg (fantastic for commuting) and reliability.
