I've just been reading the court round-up in my local rag and came across a concept i'd not encountered before: 'victim surcharges'.
However, victim surcharges seemed to be frequently applied to (what i would consider) victimless crimes.
For example:
Woman caught doing 38mph in 30mph limit.
3 points.
£45 fine.
£15 'victim surcharge'.

WTF?? Who is the victim here? The road? The copper that caught her?The kittens she might have murdered?

There is no victim.

A £15 victim surcharge is added to all fines given by courts. The money supposedly goes into some fund for helping victims and witnesses.

So, let me get this straight - if i commit a crime, regardless of the petty nature of my offence i have to pay a charge towards victims of other, entirely unrelated crimes??
How the fuck did this sneak in?

Actually, fuck it, if i'm going to be taxed the same regardless of my offence, i may as well go and carve up (another) whore and at least get my moneys worth.

Hi

Gets worse. It only applies to those fined. So if they get imprisoned instead then they don't have to pay the victims surcharge.

And whilst in prison, they can fall out of bed and sue, and get compensation for damages received whilst in prison...what a total whacked system we have!!! Rolling Eyes

It's WORSE than that INNOCENT people who are put into prison have to pay for their bed and board AND council tax, when they are released. Rolling Eyes

Worse than that. One of the things that came out in an article on the costs of the early prison release scheme was that those released early are paid to compensate them for their loss of free board and food.

Yet those who have the conviction overturned and get paid compensation for their time inside have to pay some of that back to cover their food, etc.
