Hi,

I've not posted for ages but hello to anyone that remembers me. I need a new pair of tyres for my 2001 SV, but am not sure where to start as there is so much choice. Looking for something fairly sporty - I won't have time for any track days, but a fair bit of 'fun' road riding as well as trundling around town.

Thanks,
Joe

I have Michelin pilot power (i got 2ct version) and they are far better than my last pair, quite expensive though! I know quite alot of people recommend them too!

My new favourite tyre is the Diablo Corsa III. Excellent grip from cold, in the wet (relatively for these two of course) and in the dry.
Not ideal if you're doing loads of miles however.

Depending on your riding, I'd expect to see a set last 3-4000 miles on an SV650.
Cost me £200 fitted to loose wheels for my GSXR1000.

Thanks for the two replies so far - I googled Diablo Corsa III only to find a whole discussion of them v 2CTs.

I just phoned a couple of local places and they are all £260-270 for a pair of Bridgestone 021 fitted... I just used these as I thought they were a fairly standard tyre to use as a benchmark - are they particularly expensive though?

The bT021's are a good sports touring tyre. They're what you want if you do lots of miles on your bike but can't afford to regularly go through softer sports tyres. They may last longer than the sports tyres, but they will not be as sticky.

There have been plenty of people who have got their knee down with BT021s and not come off, but at the same time if you're riding like that then the more your tyres stick to the road, the more room you have for error.

Have you considered getting the tools required and taking in the loose wheels? Usually if you buy the tyre from the shop you go to and just bring your loose wheels, they will fit it for "free" and also balance it for you. It could save you a bit of money.

I'm so glad this topic has been brought up, this summer I too will be looking for new tyres for mine, and last time out I got D207's but found towards the end of their life, I have not had the same secure feeling as I did at first. And they are no longer produced.

I'm tempted to give the new BT023s a try. Heard lots of good stuff about the BT021s they are replacing and according to Bridgestone these are much improved. They only came out last month so there isn't much about them online. Opinions?

See my post above about BT021/023, and what tools are required to do that? My mechanical skill is limited, plus I only have a rear paddock stand, so my initial thoughts are that it would be more hassle than it's worth. Cheers.

You could just take the wheels in to a garage and get it done for a few quid

or be lazy and take the whole bike in, like i did :p

also got a free chain adjustment haha

I had Mettzler M1's on my SV and found them excellent, the grip was fantastic, got the peg and fairing down with relative ease on the track, and the peg down on roundabouts quite a bit, and it was stable as a laden coal train the whole time.

Oddly, the SV with those tires was the most confidence inspiring bike I've had Shocked The mille and the R6 are far more nerve-wracking to ride.

See, I just didn't get on with the stock Metz tyres, I replaced them with the Dunlops. It would have been my old favourites Bridgestones 010's but a good friend suggested the D207's and I was hooked.

Fallen out of love with scrubs then G?

Diablo IIIs are great tyres in my experience.

Still a fan of scrubs for value, but wouldn't go for new supercorsas.
As I had a shiny bike, thought I'd make the most of it and get some shiny tyres to match (and there wasn't any good deals on scrubs at the time).

Ive got the BT021's but i'm not a knee down sporty rider. Suit my style well and seem happy in all conditions. Even did ok on the track imho.

Haven’t had much experience with the 021, but have with the 020.
For any road riding I’d do, it would be fine for what I’m trying to do. On a track day I’d be happy with it too I suspect, though less so on a race day.
What I’m less happy about is the ‘safety margin’ it offers – there’s no problem getting knee down on it if you wanted to, but if you then hit a small patch of gravel it’s less likely to recover as it’s much nearer the limit, or if a car pulls out in front of you in adverse conditions, in my experience they’re less likely to cope with a big handful of brake applied in a semi-panic.

If you’re the perfect ‘safety’ rider then it’s less of an issue, but I know I do make mistakes and so like a tyre that can take up some of the slack if I do.
