Hi everyone

I'm new to biking and just passed my cbt so looking to get my first bike at 125cc. I'm not really looking for a sporty bike although i'm open to all suggestions, what i do like is the Kawasaki Eliminator so something along they lines would be great.

I know there are thousands of new bike posts on here and you probably get fed up but i really do need some help and would be very greatful for your advice.

If you like the Kawasaki Eliminator, then you'd probably like the Honda CM125 (aka CA125 Rebel), the Suzuki GZ125 Marauder, the Yamaha XV125 Virago and maybe the Hyosung Aquila 125. Maybe at a push, the Suzuki GN125 and the Yamaha SR125, too.

Cheers guys that's been a huge help so far. I never realised just how many are out there or how expensive leathers can be lol. Been reading various magazines trying to get some ideas as i say i'm new to all this but finding this forum has been a godsend.

Ps i'm looking to spend about £1000-£1500 on the bike.

Hey theres plently off new nice looking 125's out there now a days, i think theres a vadero i think its called and the new cbf 125 looks beautiful, are you quite tall? heard the DT125s are quite good too, The VAN-VANs are nice to ride and are good fun, mostly all grunt and no go tho loll

Are you after a cruiser bike or a more standard one?

Cruisers might suit your height a bit more as the seat is lower, but bear in mind the riding position is with your feet stuck out in front of you as opposed to underneath/behind you as on a normal bike.

A 125 Virago/Dragstar would be a good choice if you want a cruiser. Or a Shadow.

Just get a cheap run about for now until you a more confident on the machine and road then flog it and get a better bike.

I think all of the 125's mentioned above (with the exception of the 2002 NSR, sorry) would make a good learner bike for you. I went with a CG because it's reputation for reliability reached me and I was not disappointed. You sound you're looking for something more relaxed though (and on the CG I think your toes would only just hit the ground) so a cruiser style might well suit you better.

That said, I personally hate that riding position of feet out in front of you. I've become slightly more addicted to the higher up position on my CG which seems to have much better balance knees gripping the tank and feeling the center of gravity and is much, much more nimble to be thrown around corners (than say my brothers Suzuki GZ125 Marauder which had to ride 100 miserable miles to get home for him).

I bought my wife a Suzuki SR125.

A nice little bike but build quality wasn't as good as a Honda.

As I say to most people, look around this forum, there are tonnes of 'what bike threads', write down the list of bikes you have seen listed, go onto google images, look at all the bikes. Cross off your list the ones you don't like.

Then go out to a few bike shops and look at the ones you do like, and if possible go for a test ride, (if able) if not, at least sit on the bike and get a feel for it - distance from seat to footpeg, how long the reach to handle bar is, that sort of thing...

Then make an informed decision based on what suits YOU.

Buy an aprilia, I've owned an Aprilia classic custom 125 for 4 years, never put a spanner on it, use it every day to ride to work, never checked the oil (apart from the 2 stroke oil, always use fully synthetic, ) totally reliable, the rotax 122 engine is bulletproof, as long as you keep the 2 stroke oil topped up and you don't thrash the balls off it. good lookin and unusual too, spares are easily available from Aprilia U.K.
