will an aprilia rs 125fp go the distance if well maintained. (2 stroke oil, piston changes ect.)???

Hi

What distance? Plenty comes down to how they are treated. Thrash them from cold and you will probably kill one rapidly. Run out of 2 stroke oil and you will kill it instantly.

just planning on getting one for a year or so, learning on that then move up, probably about 5-10k miles roughly. but yea keeping it topped up with oil and given 5-10 mins to warm up.

Hi

Suspect that however many miles you expect to do you will actually do twice as many.

It should be fine although expect to change the rings, and probably one set of rings and one piston with rings in 10k mikes.

Warming up, personally just start it and ride off but take it gently (ie, keep it under 5k) until it is well up to temperature.

i've gotta agree, you must use fully synthetic racing 2t oil, warm it up for 5 mins or so first thing in the morning and don't thrash it too soon!! the Rotax 122 engine is good provided you look after it , and change the gearbox oil regularly. Smile

On the older models they also said to check the piston / rings at 8000 km / 5000 miles.

I am a firm believer in the old saying.............. If IT AINT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT.......if your bike is running well, and the fluids are regularly topped up, why check,change the piston???? my Aprilia runs fine, no probs with the piston.

Decent piston and rings with gaskets is under £100 and a few hours fiddling. Wait until the rings fail and the barrel will be wrecked, at the very least doubling the bill (assuming you replate it or use a cheap Mitaka replacement barrel) and possibly quadrupling it (new Aprilia barrel).

That might be fine with most engines, do that with a 2 stroke engine and you will have an expensive bill.

my aprilia has just topped 23ooo miles, no problems. my suzuki gp 125 clocked 38ooo , never touched the piston, just kept the fluids topped up, didn't thrash them, always made sure they were warmed up before riding. treat them with care, they'll last . I'VE RIDDEN SMALL CAPACITY 2 STROKES FOR 34 YEARS, NEVER REPLACED A PISTON YET.
