On my CBT, my instructor showed us how to do a lifesaver, which turned out to be a quick glance over each shoulder, not really turning your head that much.

My mates dad, who's been riding for nearly 20 years pretty much turns his upper body 90 degrees and looks directly behind him.

Now obviously when it comes to the test I don't want to do too much and look like I'm not incontrol/paying attention, but I don't want to do too little either. I'm confuzzled, can anyone enlighten me as to what the examiner expects? Question

This is wrong, not only does it put you off balance you but it takes too long, mirrors are for looking behind you, a life saver is to check what is next to and slightly behind you.

you're basically just checking your blind spot.

as said above mirrors can see behind you so your blind spot is to the side/slightly behind

Agreed...

The idea of a Life Saver is to check the area you cannot see from your peripheral vision and mirrors, aka The Blind Spot...

Mirror-Indicator-L/S-Mirror-L/S-Move...All at the same time as keeping an eye on what's in front so you don't twat something/one up the arse...
