yesterday i was driving home and the car sort of lost power and now it judders at around 1500 revs and still doesn't have much power but after 2000 revs it sort of stops juddering and feels normal but still not full power, also theres a burning smell, i thought it might be a blowing exhau...st but not 100% or something to do with the spark plugs as i may of got water on one but yer help would be much appriciated, on idle it like feels like a motorbike

In such a rush I stuck it in the wrong section Laughing

You're called Conan.

Could be a blow somewhere affecting the fuel mixing going on. Or maybe the probe itself is fooked but that would not explain the burning smell. He would have to get under the bonnet for a look see.

Coil pack, particularly if its an early 2000s model. Very common fault on 4 cyl fords of that era, it dies and drops 2 cylinders.

They're fairly cheap, worth changing the HT leads while you're at it.

My mum's 2004 Monda 2.0 petrol eats a coil pack every 30-40k. The AA keep them on the van. I changed the HT leads after the last one died, one of them had significant corrosion where it meets the coil pack.

Don't drive it til its fixed, only 2 cylinders firing means unburnt fuel in the cat.

How did he "may of got water on one"?

If he did "got water on one" (not "may of") (where do you find people with such bad grammar?) then that could well be the problem; the HT lead could be arcing to ground which will cause a misfire on one cylinder.

That will cause engine vibration at idle and the burning smell is probably unburnt fuel entering his cat (oo-er), which may now be fucked.

Clean the water off and douse the area in WD40.

I am called Conan, after Conan Doyle, not Conan the Barbarian Laughing

Was thinking something like HT leads or sparks myself, not got much of a clue about cars but I figure its the same as a bike just bigger Laughing

Surely if it was the exhaust and it was bad enough to be that noticable then he would here it?

He might come along and post in here in a bit, might make things a little clearer.

hi im the friend with the mucked up focus, basically i took the car out to get some petrol and see how it runs, when i accelerate the car feels like its grumbling and struggling for power or even air. When i got home i popped open the bonnet as there was the burning smell and smoke i look around and it didnt smell like clutch but when i looked underneath it look like there was smoke bellowing out from a gasket, any chance it could be the gearbox as my dad suggested this but ill be damned if i find where i can top it up or check as i really am struggling with it, or another idea was it could be an engine mount but that smoke sort of made me think it may have something to do with the gearbox

Need help.....please

thanks,
Marius

May sound a little stupid but do you check the coils etc... in a car the same way you would on a bike?

Mal i'm free on sunday, I can probably come take a look then depending on petrol Thumbs Up would have said it was electrical as well not clutch/gearbox related. Its what happened to my GPZ (the black bike) a while back.

Ive checked the plugs there are all dry and ill give them a clean in a second, the coil pack looks fine but my mechanical knowledge is not super so not sure what id have to be looking out for, but im sure that this won't solve the problem of the smoke coming out from that gasket at the bottom,

Conan that would be great if you come down i can sort you some petrol money if you want, we can also fit the new spring if your up for it.

Could still be the HT leads or coil breaking down with age, its got like 100,000 miles on it! I'll bring my multimeter Thumbs Up

Can do the spring if you have a spring compressor? Neil and I struggled anough with valve springs without one Laughing

Well ive had a look at them and they all seem fine but yer bring your multimeter and yer the compressors have just arrived today, if we can't do anything about it im going to have to put it into the garage and just sell it once its fixed as it seems like its now going to begin with the problems.

find out exactly where the smoke is coming from?

and what kind of smoke? oil? steam? something else?

the original problem i read about the uneven running. at low revs the engine is under a lot of load and if you have a bad spark plug, HT lead or coil it would cause this then seem to disappear at higher revs.

easier way to see if its firing on all cylinders. run the car from cold for a few minutes then carefully touch each part of the exhuast pipe from each cylinder. if any are cold then it will be those that arent firing. or pull out one HT lead at a time and see if it runs differently. or get a spare spark plug and plug it into each HT lead seperately and touch the electrode to the metal of the engine. if the coil pack and lead are fine then you will see the spark as long as you know the plug is good.

a combination of those things will generally get to the bottom of it, so long as one of these things are causing you the problem.

he's right. I have a '99 1.8 focus, it did exactly what you're describing and it was the coil pack.
