so i thought i would take advantage of the nice weather today and go for a quick mid-afternoon ride along one of my favourite routes, ending up at the Heartside Cafe near Alston.

the roads were lovely and clear so i had a chance to experience my new bike and get used to riding it.
At some points along the rout there are sheep and so i ride accordingly. Having left the main sheepy areas i was able to open it up a little, and just as my guard was down, what should run out from behind a wall at the exit of a nice long bend? A MASSIVE sheep.

Oh F**K!!

Brakes clamped on, back end starting to skid and wobble, and not a chance in hell of stopping in time. Said sheep stumbled as it saw me and continued to dart over the remainder of the road. All I could think of was my bike in pieces on the floor and me doing my best superman impression, resulting in a painful landing.
Amasingly we missed one another by a literal inch. I had to take a minute or two to compose myself, before continuing home.

Nice to be reminded that we all need to stay alert to things other than vehicles on the road.

Anyone else have any similar near-misses with animals?

I fucking hate sheep, the beady eyed little shifty bastards, with their silent no facial expressions and their ganging up on you when you turn round...

Fuckers...

I know someone who had an actual hit with a sheep and it wasn't good for rider or sheep. Although rider lived. Neutral

Going over Trough of Bowland is great fun at this time of year, sheep all over the place and lambs that have absolutely no fear of anything. I have had a few suicidal sheep leap out at me, one even ran alongside me and managed to clear the cattle grid diagonally, cutting across my path.
Bloody stupid creatures, best thing for them is to be placed in a hot oven, then served with mint jelly. Drooling

I was coming back from Helmsley ('Helmsley TT' Wink ) and during a ring-clenching overtake a frickin huge grouse saunters in front of me with a defiant expression and nearly sent me on my arse...i swear i heard him laugh sadistically at me as he checked his reflection in my exhaust Evil or Very Mad

When I hadnt had my sportsbike long, a pigeon cut across my path on a NSL road. I didnt want to slam on the brakes in case I dropped it, so I collided with the pigeon, which took out a chunk of my front fairing.

I've had a few near misses with pheasants.

To be fair, they are bred to be killed, so they are just doing their job.

Other than pheasants, wood pigeons and collared doves are the worst. Closest I ever came to being killed by a small animal was when I had to duck at about 65mph for a sodding wood pigeon who decided to float down out of a tree across the motorway at head height, in heavy traffic. I'm sure they do it deliberately. I've twice had camikaze wasps try to murder me with their stings whilst riding with the collar undone, little bastards can hurt.

Well motorcyclists are probably the only chance they have of evening the score. They don't really stand much chance against a guy with a shotgun.

Just remember if you kill it you bought it! You have to pay the farmer for his poor defenseless little animal that you ran over!
On another note sheep seam to live to die! Laughing
