If you look at the picture of Hanvey closely he does look like the type of person that would do this kind of thing. Inneffective and weak in everyday life but transformed by the uniform into a thuggish bully; he just has that look about him.

He just looks ineffectual. I have a friend like that, not really very good at life, feigns experience due to a 'course he's been on...' but generally needs the uniform to prop his ego up...

The poor chap just displays all the hallmarks of a corrupted weakened ego; undershot jaw, a plaintiff look on his jowly face and an impressive set of love handles accented by an equally impressive set of moobs. (Ok, I extrapolated somewhat toward the end there...)

He just has that look about him, I bet he's also got sloped shoulders... A physical trait Lord Baden Powell associated with sloth and dishonour.

(I read that in the first edition of Scouting for Boys, its since been removed. Heh; Europe! tsk tsk.)

i'm a bit puzzled as to why he got convicted. Cruel, yes, on camera, yes, but no different to the domineering violent behaviour you see on uk cops camera shows. The sort with the voiceover that says something like "the drunken lout was taught a lesson there", when all someone had objected to was the rudeness of a police officer.

I guess there must be a line somewhere, but the forcing peoples arms up, when they are behind their back, seems a pretty standard way of inflicting pain and making them walk bent double, or bend over a desk in this case.

I think its a bit OTT, but I guess it gets the job done.

At one point on one of these shows, a decent copper, was trying to talk some sense into a guy who was a bit pissed, and he guy was getting a bit lippy, another copper didnt like it, intervened, and treated the pissed guy to a bit of cruelty. The decent copper clearly would have preferred to have been allowed the time to finish doing it his way, but had not appreciated the lip, and didnt complain to the OTT approach of the other copper, and assisted him in it.

I know they like to dominate and be in control, but I think it does rile onlookers, so I think it probably causes as many problems as it solves.

I think the issue was (if we take the circumstances at face value) the actions of the officer in question were not justified. If for example she was refusing to cooperate in getting into a vehicle or moving from A to B then reasonable force could be used to facilitate whatever needed to be done.

However, she seemed (if the report is accurate) to be be merely sitting at a desk in an interview room, further more, generally on COPWARS etc the police in question tend not to insist their victims (or not) say pretty please before being released.

I can't stand watching those cops on camera shows, its just propaganda, who wants to watch some fat swaggering supposed moral barometer on the TV, its like watching jeremy Kyle, but less staged.
