PostPosted: 18:56 - 09 Apr 2010    Post subject: Cheap Supermarket 2 Stroke Oil Reply with quote

This started off as a PM to 27cows but I figured I may as well let everyone have their say.

Being my first bike I want to keep my RXS running for all eternity. If I go to Tesco/Morrisons/Asda and get their cheap 2t oil, do you reckon it will have any effect on performance or lifespan of the engine? Does anyone have real world experience with any of these?

Ended up paying £7.99 for some Castrol Actevo at Halfords today because there was a massive queue at the Tesco petrol station for some reason and my tank was getting a bit too low for comfort. But I'd rather not keep paying that much if there's no point...I'm a bit of a cheapskate sometimes Razz

edit: Opinions on supermarket petrol vs Texaco, Shell etc are welcome too

I normally use Tesco 2T or Carlube, when I can find it. My motor has reached an incredibly high mileage with more or less total reliability. Fact is, you really only need high quality two stroke oil in high performance engines.

I've even run quite spirited 2T bikes on cheap oil (Powervalve 350, RG250) with no ill effects at all.

I used wilkinsons cheapo 2 stroke oil on the RS for about 5 thousand miles without any problems. That stuff was £1.99 for 500ml Thumbs Up

Ok. I won't be buying any until I go back to my student flat in Southampton in about a week. Probably need a top up after the weeks riding + 100 mile trek down there. Might report back then. Thanks

i once used carlube in a dt125 when i first got it. It knackered the plug up in about 15 miles lucky for me i was next to the BMW shop in southport. Got a new plug and made it back to ormskirk then the new plug gave out. DTs are heavy when you have to push them 9 miles home up hill HAHA Thumbs Down .
Dt didnt like cheap stuff at all as a bit on the fussy side.

Put some shell 2stroke in and never had any more problems. Used shell stuff in my honda ls125r korean import and the engine lasted longer than the bike did. Cant remember the figure but i had more than 40000 on the clock with no rebuilds and it started first kick every time till the day i got rid.

so stop being a stinge and buy some expensive stuff Mr. Green

I guess it varies engine to engine. I think I'll take 27cows word on what the RXS engine likes considering his credentials. Hit 350k yet?

No, little way to go yet. Hoping the current motor will make it to the landmark without calling it a day.

When it does are you just going to get a new engine or considering getting something different? I think I'd probably get a bit bored of 100cc after that many years... My RXS is dead fun until you hit about 55 though...

I've got two old bottom ends someone gave me. One has a dodgy gearbox, the other has a shot crank. I'll strip them and replace whatever goes in my motor with better bits from the spare ones. I think it'll probably be the top end that needs replacing first - power is down, though not enough to stop the old relic being rideable.

I've got several other bikes. The RXS has never been my only bike. It's my commuter and all round runabout, though I've tended to ride it more and more as fuel costs have escalated.

Would be lying if I said my RXS was exciting to ride...but I always enjoy pottering about on her. The major plus points of extreme cheapness to run, dogged reliability, low risk of getting nicked by scrotes and the fact that you can thrash it around without fear of losing your license outweigh the negative points for me.

Sorry to resurrect the thread. But I went for a ride to the nearest Morrisons petrol station today to see if they had any cheap 2 stroke; ended up doing nearly 50 miles but that's another story Razz Oddly they only had Texaco 2 stroke, although they had loads of different own brand and carlube oils. It was £2.99 per litre though, which is much less than other oil I've seen so far so I got three bottles of it. There's a tesco petrol station just down the road so I'll have a look in there at some point...
