I'm not talking about all bikes, but most bikes that I see advertised go to around 50k max and that's it. Are all other bikes rotting away on a scrap yard?

Most cars you buy will get to about 150k miles before eventually giving up the ghost.

What do you consider to be high mileage for a bike ?

and why don't they reach mileage of a car?

Mince.

The NTV's, CB's and GPZ's will go round the clock a few times I'm sure and lots of others will, they just either don't get used as often or are mistreated Granted, a lot of bikes out there seem to have design flaws which ends their life quite early. Early R6/R1's with their vulnerable gearboxes, zxr400's that munch their top ends eventually, CBR125's tend to eat their gearbox within 30k it seems. Don't forget, bikes are tuned to a higher degree than cars and rev a lot higher. You don't see many Ferrari's or Lambo's out there with high mileage, do you?

My GSXR-1000 is sitting at 45k miles at the moment, still pulls like a train.

Most bikes are good for 100k plus quite easily.

I think more get written off than cars and that could be why.

Yeah I see your point. Just wondering how much mileage I can expect from my YBR.

Far more cars are produced than bikes.

Cars don't generally get garaged when the weather's isn't nice and sunny.

Cars are more practical for travelling long distances (can't get wife, kids, luggage on a bike).

The engine would probably out last the rest of the bike.

I have a Fazer 600, 2001 plate (y) now has over 82000 miles on it, still sounds sweet. I have not done anything to engine apart from giving it new oil when I can afford it.
I am hoping it will run forever as there is nothing out there that I like as much as the MK1 fazer.

Wife and kids? Why would you want to take shackles with you on a long journey Wink

Plenty of bikes do reach high mileage. I've seen VFRs, GPZ, BWM and even ZX9Rs with 80k+ on them.

Weren't CB500 engines factory tested to over 200,000 miles

There's nothing stopping a bike from reaching a high mileage, the limiting factor is generally the biker. Also bear in mind the relatively cheapness of bikes, and relative expense of their parts against car parts.

How many people do you know that get issued a company bike to do 30,000 miles a year in?

Still, let the myth perpetuate. Lots of cheap high mileage bikes for me.

My YBR now has 25k on it, mostly put on by me (except the first 600). A couple of people went around the world on YBR's, one of which clocked up 86'900km (about 54k miles). Check out https://www.re-moto.com/statistics.php?lang=eng and scroll down to the 'Motorcycles' section.

I had a CX500 that'd done 285,000 miles when I got it, full service history to back up the mileage. I took it to just under 300K and it was still going, though it had started to consume oil at a worrying rate.

But in general the higher state of tune and the fact that bikes are designed to rev high and be caned means they generally don't last anywhere near as long as cars.

If you look after an engine, even small ones can last and last (like my current RXS motor, which is still rolling at around the 90,000 mile mark, though I fear the end is probably nigh as it's started making assorted peculiar noises lately Laughing ).

Very Happy

It was a damn sight more than 30k and on rather than in.

As to the OP, my current bike is on 80k and the previous machine was on 138k when it got sold. Maintenance and not stacking it into street furniture, those are the keys. The main issue is that in modern motorcycling culture bikes are generally leisure vehicles and toys, people want the latest and greatest rather than the machine they've owned for a couple of years. Couple this with the fact that most riding is fair weather meaning they don't get given much of a chance to rack up large numbers on the odometer.

i gots an R1 with 60000 on the clock and still going strong.

i think the reason behined bikes not outlasting cars is cars rev to around 7000rpm max bikes rev to over 20000rpm so alot more wear will occur.
