Hi all, I have just recieved this email from a guy who bought some brake discs off me last month.

Quote:
hi dam0no, i purchased a set of yamaha front discs from you through this site and from reading your description was under the immpression that they were good, usable and to your own admission ("They are in used condition but have plenty of life left in them"). you said that they were fully floating but have aftermarket tourquise parts on which give are missing springs from the back and the amount of movement that these discs have they would rattle within the calipers and be useless for breaking and are not fit for purpose. will you please send me a return adress so i can send them back to you and once received send me my money back so i can purchase some that will do he job. many thanks.

I thought fully floating discs rattled a bit anyway? and there were never any springs, just circlips that hold the bobbins in place.

What do we think? I'm not into ripping anyone off but don't want to be refunding money if the discs are perfectly fine.

Cheers all,

Damon

Hi. Not sure if the disc should 'rattle' in the carrier, but there should be a wavy washer between the bobbin and the disc to allow some sideways movement without slop (in my limited experience). If the disc rattles, then that does not sound correct, although a quick Google check appears to suggest that some rattle is commonly experienced.

Perhaps you should do some quick research, as your buyer may not be familiar with this type of brake construction/operation. Or the discs are faulty.

Did he pay through paypal? If he did then you may as well accept the fact that he WILL get his money back whether you like it or not. Is i worth the hassle?

I'm not bothered about giving him his money back, but I just wanted to know if the discs are ok with a rattle and if I could suggest an easy fix for him to make them quieter

He has already made up his mind, nothing you say will change the fact that he feels ripped off, you can see it in his email.

Its certainly not unusual for floating discs to clunk or rattle. From what I've seen some are fitted with a spring clip to reduce the noise but not always. I remember one disc I saw had what looked like silicon on the bushes, I guess for the same reason.

I've seen a fancy CCM with a floating disc you could move about on the bobbins with your hand very easily.

I dont know about the ratling issue, but from a buyer beware point of view, he brought them off you over a month, and presumably has had them fitted to his bike and using them for, well at least a week you would assume, so if you got them back they would be in worse condition than when you sent them, as such is he entitled to a full refund?

Personally, money being an issue for me i wouldent be giving any refunds. Cash your money out of paypal now...
