Hey =]
I'm Leah, and I'm a 19 year old girl looking to start my journey into biking.

I've got my provisional license, and I'm saving up for a decent 125 bike to take my CBT on.
(Although, I might not wait that long, I'll just rent one xD )

I'm looking at something like a Honda CBR or NSR, or maybe a Yamaha YBR.... something like that, anyway.

I do admit to being a bit dull when it come to bikes, but they definately have my interest, and I'm ready and willing to learn.

My aspirations are to learn to ride well enough to Prospect for the UK's only patched WMC, MsChiefs, and to enjoy riding. That's about it!

Thanks for reading!
Leah x

Welcome Smile

I'd go for a YBR myself. Excellent all rounder.

Don't go for a CBR. Very expensive, from what I've heard not that exciting, and the 'sportsbike look' won't fool anyone into thinking it's anything but a 125.

I had a 1994 TZR 125 which was a fantastic learner. £600 on eBay. Look for something like that, as if it's been looked after and in a decent condition it'll be as reliable/fast/etc as a modern bike but a lot cheaper.

As much as I loved my NSR, when it decided to play up it was a right bastard, my original plan was to get a CG to start off with, then I saw the NSR and bought one of those instead, but if I was just starting out I'd go with a CG as they are pretty much bullet proof and the re-sale on them wouldn't be far off what you payed for it...

Welcome to the Forum and the world of biking... Thumbs Up

Thanks everyone for the welcomes =]

Quickly, a lot of people I've spoken to have said that about the CBR, that it looks pretty but really it's a load of crap... I think I've been put off them to be honest.
The TZR looks pretty good, but possibly a bit bulky?

Mr Kris & Adam, the CG125 seems like a good idea... but finding one in my area is proving pretty difficult.

And as for T's or GTFO...... (.) (.) ;]

Haha, nobody see these puppies!

Hi, welcome!

I too was tempted by a CBR until I saw one on L plates. The skinny tyres and low seat made the guy who was riding it look like a giant! You would be better off on a YBR or CG type bike until you get your licence, but thats already been pointed out before.

YBR but I'm biased as I ride one. Bought one with just 600 miles on it as I couldn't find any CG's in my area at the time. Now racked up 25'000 miles and it's still going. Reliable, cheap and easy to ride and work on if you want to. Thumbs Up

CG is easy to fix, but not very fast (I get 55mph on a flat but I'm something like 20 stone, you should be able to get 60 at least)

I don't know about YBR's though

I'll let you guys in on a little secret. I'm about 10 stone (I'm a skinny lanky fuck, but I eat more than anyone I know. Seriously. 1 & 1/2 chicken at Nandos with large peri chips and garlic bread) and I got 55 most of the time. Never saw 60.

You know why?

Weight doesn't affect top speed. Only acceleration. So length of time.

Aerodynamics do affect top speed though I doubt it'd make much difference at those speeds, if any.

I'm around 18 stone and got 72 out of the YBR (it's the 2005 model with the carb so has a few more bhp than the later fuel injected models which might have made a difference). This was downhill on the M11 with no wind and the poor engine was screaming its nuts off. Usual top speed is around 60-65 on the commute (with no head wind and not going uphill and it takes days to get there) if I push it but I tend to hold it around 50-55. GPS measured as well Thumbs Up .

As for ease of maintenance it's pretty identical to the CG apart from the engine itself being an overhead camshaft design rather than push-rod, but that's only an issue if you are going to take the engine apart. There's a Haynes book written for the YBR last year as well, and the CG has one too.

Because we're talking about CGs i feel obliged to come in this thread and say you should get one... because they really are the most epic learner bike you can buy Thumbs Up

So epic, in fact, that i'm buying my girlfriend one... and she's quite small.... I managed 65 on my second CG on a good day.

The older ones are faster though... and have the retro look if that's what you're into.

Other than that, i reccommend you get a CG, but a 2004> one as they have the disk brake and electric start.

The plus points are that you can rag them to shit as long as you change the oil at regular intervals, and the air filter and all that jazz.

Don't leave it with an oil leak till it runs out of oil or it'll seize (from experience).

And if you drop it, all the damage is taken by the handlebars, the footpegs and the rear grab handle, so you don't have to worry about scraping up the nice plastics.

Mine was hit by a car side-on and it still looks fine, apart from a missing side panel.

Welcome to the forum, by the way Smile

I thought because of the extra weight the engine has to work harder to move, and because of that it lowered the top speed.
Interesting to know it only effects the acceleration.

It does have to work harder. Hence acceleration slows. But top speed should still be top speed.

What affects top speed is aerodynamics, friction, gearing and power output (not power to weight ratio). Probably a few other things.

I can't actually remember the formula...

I think it is F=MA

Force being the power of the bike (which doesn't change through weight or anything), Mass being, well the weight of the bike and you and acceleration being the acceleration.

So getting A would me A=F/M

The bigger the M the smaller the A.

So yeah.

At least I'm pretty sure that's what I'm on about. Been awhile since I did physics... But I do know that weight doesn't affect top speed.

Hell trucks in the USA with the big long roads can reach incredible speeds from stock because of the size and power of the engine, yet take absolute ages because how much it weighs. Take the load off and it accelerates faster but still has the same top speed.

Enough physics now Laughing

Get riding Wink

This means for the same power, aka the same rate of energy transferred to the road for an hour, the lighter car would be doing 100mph but the heavier car would be doing 86mph after accelerating for an hour.

However, top speed would be incredibly near the same in the real world, the only thing that slows cars down a huge amount is drive train resistance and air resistance, heavier = more friction on the tyres mainly causing more rolling resistance, so many be slightly slower at speed.

Welcome to the forum Heulyn, the mad house welcomes you. I'd go for a CG125 if I were you, ride it for a little bit and sell it for what you bought it for, then buy a nice big bike when you pass your A2. Thumbs Up.

I went for Physics head, not Maths Mechanics head. Razz.

Also, F=MA won't tell me top speed without other formulae anyway, only acceleration and when I was interested in proving top speed after a certain time, the other equations seemed the easier route as they have all that included. Smile.

Or we could've jst gone with the whole "weight doesn't affect top speed" theory.

As it's pretty much negligible for a 125 Laughing Certainly for most bikes anyways.

No need to find out top speed of a cg125 Wink

Anyways, let the newbies continue Laughing
