Why do riders put the inside leg out, sometime while approaching a corner?

They asked Pedrosa that a couple of years ago. He replied that he didn't even know he did it.

I would suspect it's a kick back from motocross riding that I'm guessing the majority of riders started with. Probably a 'safety-blanket' type thing, in case the front washes out.

I'm pretty certain that Rossi started doing it right after the incident with Gibernau, saying that he does it to help balance the bike on the limit..

I'm also pretty certain that half of the rest of the motoGP grid do it because Rossi does it Smile

Matt Oxley suggests that it makes the bike slighly easier to tip into the very first part of the turn.

I suspect a lot of it's in the mind and that's why the majority of the field started to do it.

Yeah I think it makes people behind go "wtf" for a second, in a race where 0.01 second counts its probably worth it.

I've got some sort of twitch, where if I go down 3 or 4 gears really quickly under heavy breaking, my leg flicks out after the last gear change, I've not idea why it does it, something about moving my leg really fast. Strange.

I use my legs to help balance when out on the bike, especially if it is windy. Cool

can anyone honestly say they did it before rossi? All Rossi needs to do now is a big statement saying leg out is impacting his riding and he now realises it's slowing him down and just see how quick everyone else stops doing it

Until i see motogp doing supermoto style i see no need for it. Some have said its rossis stress meter, others that it is a blocking technique. For me it looks stupid.

I thought it was to rest the leg/increase blood flow at a point where sticking your leg out won't slow you down (down the straight would be a big no-no aerodynamically).

Not sure how true it is but you never know...

My best guess, if the above isn't the whole story, it's a blocking technique. Didn't work on Lorenzo to well though did it? Wink

And yes, it does look bloody silly. Seen Tommy Hill (and a few others) have some right hairy moments through not being fully in control.
