https://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_uk/hs.xsl/offerdate.htm?offerdate=9893

Starting on the 22/4/10 with rods at £3.99.

Not the greatest welder in the world but comes with a 3 year guarantee. Definitely going to try and pick one up.

not a bad price that

never been able to arc weld though, my hands shake too much

I've got an old mig welder I found in a skip more than ten years ago that's still going fine, or I might have been tempted to bye one of those

I'd much rather have a MIG but will try and get one of these anyway. I've not done much stick welding but it's bound to come in handy sooner or later. It's like my compressor - doesn't get used that much, but it's damn handy when you need it.

Good post, will get me one of them! I'm currently doing a 20 week introductory arc welding course.

As part of some home research I found this PDF. SMAW Guidelines.

Very American, but well worth a look.

I got a pack last time round, you can hardly put any torque on them at all before they sheer the worm drive.

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I'll avoid getting a pack if they're crap.

I just wish they'd build a Lidl or Aldi near me.

I was looking at taking some time off work next week so this confirms it for me. I'll have to take the car though as I doubt this will fit in the top box.

Has anyone been to Lidl's special offers things before? What are the stock levels like - will I get there to find they only had two to start with that sold one minute after opening?

There is a company called Wrekin Machinery but I can't find their website.

I spent about £100 there a couple of years ago.

Arc welder £35 upto 100 amps and it does simple jobs but needs higher power for bigger things.

Angle Grinder was £12 and has been left out in snow, ice, rain. It is all rusty but still works. Used it quite a lot for grinding and cutting.

Proper chromed vanadium spanner sets for stupid cheap prices. Screwdrivers for under £1 each with proper rubber grips. Was a brilliant place for budget tools that last.

I think it was online order only but they used to have a good website with some really cheap tools on.

*goes to google again*

What sort of amps is it chucking out, cant seem to find it on their site?

I've used much more expensive Arc sets (Fronius/Kemppi/Lincoln) on 240v and they struggle to do something as measly as a 4mm fillet. For £30 I really wouldn't be expecting that to do much at all.

I think it said about 80 amps or 3mm.

Not the greatest but will be worth a play possibly. I've not done much stick welding so will probably just play about with this mostly but I've no doubt it will come in handy at some point.

Even if it ends up being total rubbish, someone on eBay will buy it.

I don't have an arc welder, but i'm tempt too. I have a clarke MIG welder for home use. At work, we have licoln etc and the quality really does pay off buying the proper stuff.

It just that the duty cycles on these are quite short, and you have to let them cool down quite often.

Inverter welders are much better!

It's a shame the Lidl site gives so little information on the welders capabilities, but from the looks of it, you won't be welding anything of a significant thickness although it'll let you get a hold of the basics.

You will need to consider where you're going to be storing the electrodes though as they need to be kept in a dry, warm area.

It'll be worth getting yourself a proper welding mask (preferably react-a-lite) as I've found the handheld ones to be next to useless for welding (OK for observing though).

If you get a chance, have a look at your local college to see if they offer any evening course's as it will certainly help pick up the techniques.

I definitely agree with Davo on the reactive masks - makes thing so much easier.

I did a course at Farnborough college in the evening once a week. Really enjoyable and would recommend it. Only did a couple of weeks on the arc welder though as really wanted to learn the other types.

My girlfriend's sister has a bench that was broken by a fat man sitting on it. Seems like the perfect excuse for a play with this.

I've wanted to have a go at welding for some time, so I'm REALLY tempted to give this one a try.
I guess if the kit and/or my skills are not up to the mark, it's not going to cause me any sleepless nights at this price Thumbs Up Karma

I need one of these now for definite - my barbecue has collapsed after a winter left rotting followed by a burning both today and yesterday.

Seems like a good tester mini project.

Not a chance.

I got one of these welders last year, its been a good bit of kit and works well, ive welded up to 4mm plate with it and its not hesitated, or ever had any problems with duty cycles or anything like that after long runs, even built my beer trailer with it, but it'l blow holes in anything less than a mil thick.

Cheers
John

It will probably blow holes in the panels - are they about 1mm thick?

More expensive welders can do the thinnest/thickest stuff.

Anyway, I don't know much about arc welding - I can MIG weld reasonably enough so will be using this for practice. Come round and we'll try it out and then enter Scrapheap Challenge.
