Buying a CG125

Hi All

I'm trying to buy a cg125 for my gf at the moment.

I have found one near me which I'm going to look at tonight.


However, I don't have any experience with decent 125's (my first was a chink thing which I killed on the London > brighton rally)

I'm going to offer £800/850 (advertised for £999)

It's a 2006 with 42,000miles taxed and mot'd


Is there anything particular to look for with cg's and is the price fair for the millage?
I'm not too sure as one I was goign to get on ebay was a 2007 with 13k on it and that just went for £840
It was a training bike so I guess it had been abused somewhat but not sure about the pricing.

whopping mileage for a 125, id look out for another ex-training bike, it will probably have less abuse.

I would stick to your £800 point, as long as it looks good to you, it should be fine, worst thing about newer CG's is the lack of a chain guard, so the chain wears quicker, but thats an expected part anyway.

I would suggest a CBR 125 for your lady.

You can pick one up for about a grand or a bit more on e-bay or autotrader in decent condition. They are durable as well.

She will look cool on it and it's very easy bike to ride and not too much powerfull. Acceleration is also moderate.

The price for this CG is quite high considering the mileage,
unless it is in mint condition.
CGs are very durable and looked after reach very high mileages, but the shape of this bike is oldish.

If you really want a CG look a bit more for best price-condition relation.

Ouch. I wouldn't want to spend more than a few hundred on a CG that's done such serious mileage, and suggest it looks a little dodgy so better avoided anyway (especially in light of it all). I was going to post before your last post to tell you to take note at how well the owner had looked after it (proof of good care being pretty much required if it were me buying) and use that as your main indicator of whether it's worthwhile or not (at 42K miles that is).

Thing is 42K is pretty high in my mind for a little CG, let alone 80K+ (or 140K like your example could have - that's crazy mileage in 4 years and almost certainly dictates courier use or worse).

If that's on the original engine it must be near-death now, no matter how well it's been looked after. I would have thought almost everything needs to have been replaced (many components multiple times) by 142K miles. Can you be certain it's all been done?

In 2007, i managed to buy my first bike (a CG125), for £500. It was an 02 plate with at best average cosmetics, excellent mechanical condition, and 13K miles. The price of 125s has gone up (and besides which that was an absolute gem of a bike for the money even back then), but i don't think the example you're looking at is worth nearly as much as you're planning to pay for it.

I also can't see how the CBR125 is a more sensible starter bike than the CG. I've been led to believe it puts out the same power, just has fancy plastics to break when the inevitable learner drops occur. You also get less bike for your £ (generally) as it's a sports style machine.

The description says very good condition with no damage or scratches.

Not going down the cbr route as IMO, they're shit, tiny and horrible, I (and she) much prefer the cg or ybr

I have forgotten how hard it is to buy a decent 125 on a budget being on bigger bikes for the last 3 years


More oddness... I have just noticed he has listed the model as a CG 125-4 which suggests it is a 2004 model (to my knowledge) but the first registration is September 2006


So, I'll test ride it, see how the engine feels/sounds and take it from there I guess.

When you do the vehicle check things, where/when is the millage recorded? MOT time?

11,500 miles

Full working order, new front and rear brakes, just had oil change, cleaned the carb, ACF50 everywhere for rust, new bulbs, new spark plug, clean chain.

The only issue is the exhaust which has rust on the downpipe which will eventually be changed and then the price will go up. It has been cleaned quite a bit though.

Will get it fully mot'd and taxed soon too.

Would avoid that CG like the plague. Buy the YBR - better bike all round anyway

I just got back from looking at the cg...

Oh there are some pillocks out there

Battery is flat so has to be bump started.
Guy takes 15 mins to find the right key
Then realises the chain is still on it
Snaps the key to the chain in the padlock.

I question him about the millage discrepancies and he is "baffled" first blaming the previous owner then his brother who happens to be in Brazil.

Thing was filthy and very far from the "very good condition, no scratches" description.
