As it says GPS, I presume it's mobile units of some kind - otherwise you'd presume they'd know where they've put them.
If it actively uses GPS - I believe you can get GPS blocker thingies fairly cheaply, but not sure if they actually work well.

All I can think is that you pass one reciever and stores your plate number and time. Some time later you pass another one somewhere else and stores the same info. It then calculates how long it would take you to get from A-B travelling at the max speed limit all the way - if you're quicker then you get taxed/fined/a "penalty"

Unless they put a GPS on your bike, then it doesn't. They are using a phrase people recognise to make it sound more sophisticated.
What it may do is easily locate the position of the two average speed units so they can calculate your speed from the time you take between the two.

What some very naughty people have been doing to the speed cameras in East Anglia is SETTING THEM ON FIRE!

Now i would never recommend that people living near these new cameras should ever do that Smile cos that`s illegal.

Yeah,
saw this earlier on the daily mail, i have a feeling they may be forward image capture cameras so bikes may be okay from what i saw there.

They will just catch your number plate at position A, then at Position B, calculate the average speed and come up with a number.

Already common practice down the A14 cambridge end, although that being said i have never heard of anyone actually getting a fine there...

Could go through the first, blast your way down at 150, quick 5 minute ciggie break before you go through the second Smile

And yeah, fire, not a bad idea indeed... unless u get caught.

It'd be easier to fit a reg plate from a scrapped bike.

I have my RXS reg plate hanging up in my garage ready for when the time comes Wink

speed cameras are a nightmare, and especially the average speed ones.

Quote:
"Average speed recorders have proved to be very successful in roadworks on the major trunk roads. They have reduced injury and deaths and we would like to replicate this positive effect on more rural roads.

i live in durham where they do not believe in speed cameras and are very bike friendly, im sure my dad mentioned some stats he had seen showing durham having lower death and injuries than those regions who have many speed cameras.
ive been trying to find some stat but i cant find them anymore, so my claim has no weight...

in terms of average speed cameras, arent you more likely to have a crash through them because your constantly checking speed rather than riding where you are comfortable?

I know that road pretty good, used to live in Downderry, dunno why they picked it, the statistically dangerous bit is between Antony and Trerulfoot (by 'dangerous' I mean the best bit). I'm now decidedly geriatric and boy am I pleased, the 'screwing down' and loss of personal freedom these days appals me. The situation can only get worse and I really don't envy those just starting out. The bastards will have us all marching in step when we come out the front door shortly. Democracy ?.

solution: find a new road on the cornwall devon border and not sing and dance about it

I notice most of my time in average speed section (when they can see my plate...eg in a car) is checking my speed because of course I am making much slower progress than is normally safe.

I think perhaps normal speed cameras are more 'dangerous' as you have to always be on the lookout for them, and I have seen many a driver slamming hard on brakes for them. I have heard of people crashing/coming off bikes trying to slow down in time (they are probably going a bit too fast but nothing is too fast in some places Wink )

What's the penalty if you're caught with a number plate that flips up?

You shouldn't be speeding anyway. Rolling Eyes

This poster is missing the point completely.....

"These sound like a great idea. It means I can smile sweetly for the camera, then boot it all the way till my speedo's humming, then pull in to the lay-by before the next one so I can relax over my next spliff before starting all over! bring em on!!

Well I guess that is a good thing it wouldn't be so hard to catch those who violate the rules in the street. Mr. Green

That's how they justify it to themselves. And then they get caught speeding themselves, like that CEO of a camera company Thumbs Up

Combine these average speed cameras with the current jump-out-of-a-bush "speed enforcement" policies, and the end-result is going to be an even greater % of brain-dead-at-the-wheel drivers crashing into each other, and a really crap and unpleasant to use road transport network.

I used to have one of those. The plate underneath read 4Q Laughing I never actually used it though, largely because there were only about 20 cameras in the whole country at that time LOL

Please don't make martyrs out of idiots like this.

You did notice the quote you are taking is from 19th April, so the poster probably wouldn't have read the article from the 3rd August Wink.

Anyway, you have always declared every modification of any sort (ie non-original brand indicator bulb) to your insurer, yes?
If not, you too could have been riding with out insurance and deserve to be burned alive, at a guess.

Further; which would you prefer, if you were given the choice of two in a hypothetical situation: an uninsured rider* that crashes in to your bike and pays out of their own pocket, or a rider who's insured that crashes in to your bike, then goes on to claim it's your fault and successfully claims against you because they got witnesses to lie about the situation.
(Asked to illustrate that having a bit of paper does not a moral person make.)

He pleaded guilty. Sadly that most definitely does not mean he committed the crime as described;l with the way our police and justice system works.
It does suggest he decided this route would be the least hassle. Seems quite possible that he was coerced in to doing so with the threat of penalties for the other offences.
