Basically i randomly look on Ebay for TLR from time to time, i've always wanted one but went for the ZX7R because of the insurance at the time.
A few years on and im still keen, i know the issues, its as big as a barge, known to chew up gear box's yada yada yada.

I messaged this guy about a 1999 black RW.
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190389023403&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
I want some input from you guys and please don't try to put me off with the physical side of the thing, im fine with it, as i am fine with my 7R.

What i really want to know is will the age be against me on this one or what?
Its got a lot of add on's, like an alarm for one and a TRE electronic managment thingy.
No i don't like the carbon fibre bits on there but i can live with that until i change them.
It has 39,000 on the clock and that scares me, not because im a soft southerner who thinks thats high mileage but i know it's done a fair bit of trecking. My 7R has only done 20K and feels lovely.

In his words...
"No mechnical issues at all. Has Suzuki services at 4 & 8 thousand miles and then i had a full on 16k service done 1500 miles ago and only issue was a stiff rear caliper which Suzuki rebuilt"
Can't go wrong with full servicing i guess, if he's got paper work, which he says he has.

So what do you think guys?
The guy is keen on swapping, the paint work worried me, its just be resprayed and we all know what that usually means. He said he has got a HPI to hand but his MOT tester assures him it's fine.

My Mates TL had a trashed main bearing at about that mileage needed the engine to be replaced. Th Swigarm looks like it has been painted badly. Mirrors look gash, it doesn't say it has full service history.

Hi

The TL appears to have a reputation for the gearbox to go at about 20k, and that has done double that mileage with no mention of the box being touched. Given the size of that potential bill it would put me off, when TLs with far fewer miles seem available for similar money.

However if could be the box was done recently and he didn't put it on the advert as major engine work could put people off.

All the best

Keith

Yeah, i've heard of these issues...but then i was also told my ZX7R would drop a valve by 20,000 on the clock.
I don't know it's a tough one, i know of TL's running well up to over 50K but i guess it all depends on the owner??

Hi

Quite possibly the owner, and quite possibly where the miles are done. 40k cruising in top down motorways is going to mean 2nd has barely been touched so little chance to destroy it. It is a tough one.

All the best

Yeah probably, problem i've got is that i can't afford a better example if i sell my 7R first. Im going to have a look at it anyway so ill be able to see what it's like.

tell me about it. i was utterly shocked when it sold for that price. But like my father said he paid £3300 for it 7 years ago and has had his fun and now he bought a zx12r to replace it.

still shocked tho at the end price and you see people paying 2.5+ on high milage dogs that have been tarted up with shitty stickers etc and evedntualy abused.

and 3500 for this

Is it a TL R specifically you want? If you're just after meaty power and a bit of attitude, an S could be a better buy. Looks a little less dated, and has more mid range. Cheap insurance, really cheap Razz

TLR, Ram, i want it to be big, loud and V-twin'y.
The S is cool, i knew a guy from a patch club who rode one like he stole it...probably did...hmmm, yeah i like the S.
Its all about, how do i get rid of the 7R, get a TLR and don't loose out too much in the process.
The 7R is debatably quicker than the TLR and more reliable. Thinking

R motor, more power than an S model, unless its the early 97 S model then they are about the same!

my tlr has been far more reliable then my old 7r by miles!

im looking around the 2K mark for my tlr mate, so maybe a no go for you then?
